Background

Scope and content:

The Hardy Family Collection consists of photographs and documents dating from about 1906 to 1994. The photographs depict the Hardy family and some of the other early residents of Broward County as well as later generations of the Hardy family. The documents include memorial materials from 1915 for I. I. Hardy, one of the first Broward County Commissioners, and postcards.

Biographical / historical:

Isaac I. Hardy, his wife, and their seven children were the first permanent residents of what later became Broward County. The Hardy family moved to the area in 1899 from Hypoluxo, Florida after seeing Model Land Company promotions of land sales. They raised crops of tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants for commercial sale and lived on the riverbank of Cypress Creek. The site of the original home is currently Lake Santa Barbara at SE 7th Street and 23 Avenue in Pompano Beach.

The children in the family were four brothers, Roland, Mack, Eugene "Gene", Jesse, and two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty", Katherine "Anna" and Clara.

Isaac I. Hardy and his wife were originally from North Carolina. Hardy served on the first Board of Commissioners when Broward County was formed in 1915. After his death on December 24, 1915, the board passed a resolution in his honor.

Elizabeth Hardy married Lucious S. Warren, Jr. She donated the collection to the Broward County Historical Commission, and also participated in an oral history interview in 1980.
