The Herbert C. Davis Collection consists of documents related to the career of Herbert C. Davis, including Davis' engineering activities, and photographs of the N. Andrews Avenue Bridge construction, between 1947 and 1949.
- Biographical / historical:
Herbert Charles Davis (1879-1957) was a civil engineer. He was born in London, England, and later became a US citizen "by father's naturalization before registration majority". He married Pearl A. Ross (1881-1951), probably before the First World War. The couple remained married until Pearl died in 1951. They had 3 children: Cyril H. Davis, John L. Davis, and Pearl L. Heynes.
In 1915, Herbert C. Davis became the first Broward County Engineer when the county was created. He was also a land surveyor for the county and a civil engineer for the City of Fort Lauderdale. Between 1947 and 1949, he conducted the construction of the North Andrews Avenue bridge on New River. In his honor, the bridge was officially named "H. C. Davis Memorial Bridge" by the county clerk Ted Cabot.
