Sheldon Sayles served in the US Army during WWII. He was attending the Indianapolis College of Pharmacy when the Japanese attacked on 7 December 1941 and decided to join the Army instead of waiting to be drafted. On 23 Sep 1942 Sayles was formally inducted into the cavalry at Ft. Riley where he received his basic training in a non-segregated unit. In Jan 1943 he was accepted into the Edgewood Arsenal Chemical Warfare School as a student in its officer's candidate school. He graduated in 3 months with a rank of 2nd Lt. Sayles was transferred to the Army Transportation, serving in both the 343rd and 341st Harbor Craft Companies, before being shipped to England. Once in England, Sayles joined the airborne and helped in the preparations for Operation Market Garden. After V-E Day he was transferred to the 600th Port Company, a non-segregated unit tasked with unloading chemical munitions for the war against Japan. V-J Day occurred while Sayles was en route to his new assignment. The collection consists of a manuscript written by Sayles about his experiences during the War and his family.

The manuscript covers many topics, such as training and US activities in CA, Myrtle Beach, SC, and then in the CBI Theater, life in India, the economic crisis, prostitution, anti-Japanese sentiment, and gender concepts in China. He also discusses coming home and peace at the end of the war.
