Kenneth F. Harniman served in the Army Air Force as a lead navigator for the 451st Bomb Squadron in the Atlantic and European Theaters (ETO). The collection contains a memoir entitled "A Wartime of Vignettes" by Captain Harniman. He joined the Army Air Force on 5 November 1941, and trained out of Maxwell Field (Montgomery, Alabama) and Dorr Field (Arcadia, Florida). He was initially stationed with the 451st out of MacDill Field (Tampa, Florida). He flew navigation missions to Trinidad, Belem, Natal, Ascension Island, Liberia, Dakar, Marrketch, and Port Lyautey before being sent to Andrews Field in England for combat duty. Harniman flew in combat missions over Europe from 31 July 1943 to 22 April 1944, where he was captured by the Germans as a POW when he bailed out of his B-26. He was interrogated at Frankfurt and held in Stalag Luft III until 27 January 1945. He was then forced to march by foot to Nuremberg until 4 April, where he and other POWs escaped and hid out, and were rescued by U.S. Army soldiers on 29 April. The manuscript has many photos of camp life in the U.S. and abroad, as well as personalized hand-drawn artwork depicting life in Stalag Luft III.
