Robert Maher served in the Navy aboard the USS Borie, DD-215, and the USS J. Fred Talbot in the Atlantic. The collection includes a manuscript entitled "Sailor's Journey into War," which is Maher's memoir. His memoir begins in 1939 and continues until the end of the war. The Borie served in the Atlantic theater as a member of the "Neutrality Patrol" for the canal. In addition to writing about the experiences of the Borie, Maher also writes about his time on the ship and his time spent on leaves from it. The USS Borie was sunk by Germans in late 1943, and Maher was assigned to the USS J. Fred Talbot for the end of the war.
