Joseph Rosenberg (Josel Rozenberg) was a Russian-Jewish immigrant who arrived in New York in 1904 after avoiding re-conscription in the Russian Army. He served in the Russian Army from 1899-1904 as a non-commissioned, under-officer. He played the cornet and the string bass in the army band. The Rosenberg Collection includes a bound manuscript of music with over 100 titles covering such genres as: waltzes, mazurkas, quadrilles, marches, polkas, and polonaises. Mostly with parts, some solos for cornet, some full score. The majority of the songs are in Russian with several in Hebrew. One piece is dated 1897. There are also papers from his time in the army including a photograph of the army band, a temporary passport issued by the army, his service record, and his army reserve card. In addition, there is his ticket for passage on the Bremen from Frankfurt to New York, dated November 3, 1904.
