Collections

The Florida State University School of Dance Records contain promotional materials, programs, news clippings, photographs, correspondence, scrapbooks, school publications, dance scores, and other material documenting the school's performances and pedagogy.The collection consists of four series.

The materials in this record group cover a time period from the 1920s through 2010s. The amount of material varies by event, as some may have several documents, photos, etc., while others may only have a single brochure or program.

This collection relates to Staff Sergeant Charles R. Gentges who served with the 34th Infantry Division in the North African and Italian campaigns during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Bronze Star Medal. The collection also relates Charles R. Gentges' wife Florence, and daughter, Mary Elizabeth Gentges.

The George Allen collection contains materials documenting the professional and personal life of Florida attorney and civil rights activist W. George Allen, whose work led to the desegregation of the Broward County Schools in 1970. The materials in the collectino date from 1943 to 2013, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1970 to 2013.

The collection consists of nearly 10,000 photographs in electronic format of historic architectural sites in the United States, primarily in the Southeastern United States.

This collection relates to Glenn Edward McDuffie who served as a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class with the U.S. Navy during World War II. McDuffie claimed to be the sailor kissing a nurse in the World War II Victory over Japan August 15, 1945 photograph which was taken by Life magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. The collection includes various documentation, testimony, interviews, polygraph examination results, photographs, forensic examination reports, and documents related to supporting the claim by McDuffie.

This collection consists of a Digital Video Disk which contains interviews by videographer Gordon Gair of World War II veterans residing at Cypress Cove Retirement Center, Ft. Myers, FL

This collection documents Grady Drake's professional and personal legacy at Broward College. It includes founding correspondence, contracts, awards, photographs, administrative records, annual reports, evaluations, community event memorabilia, retirement keepsakes, and personal notes exchanged with the first college president and other key figures. The files cover library development, faculty leadership, professional contributions, interaction with civic organizations, and Drake's ongoing relationships with colleagues from 1960 through his passing in 2019.
