This item is a notice of authorization to receive into military service of the Confederate States, companies, battalions, or regiments within the territorial limits of Northwest Florida between the Suwannee and Choctawhatchee Rivers and 21 counties (listed) of Southern Georgia. The notice is signed by Howell Cobb, Brigadier General, Commanding District. The item is a printed page, approximately 4 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, entitled: Head Quarters, District of Middle Florida, Quincy, January 28, 1863.

Collection consists of the following:

A broadside regarding St. John's Church in Jacksonville, Florida. A notation in the handwriting of Miss Louise Richardson, Librarian at Florida State University Library, attached to the broadside reads, "Broadside St. John's Church, Jax. Fla. Lot purchased Oct '59 from O. Norwood. Very rare," and the question mark following the date "1845," pencilled in at the top of the broadside, indicates uncertainty as to when it was printed.

This broadside pertains to the emancipation of enslaved peoples, Philadelphia, PA, September, 1863. Other than the name of John Henry Hopkins, Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont, the broadside contains 104 names of Episcopal churchmen. The broadside uses language similar to the language of the Civil Rights articles that were appearing in the 1960s. The broadside also lists names of Episcopal churches, their locations, and the names of bishops, rectors, prevosts, and professors of Divinity Schools.
