Attendance and Christmas Cards, 1942

Containers:
10.0018 - Box 1, Folder 002
Scope and content:

This folder contains attendance cards for Margaret's sons during the war. Many of these were from the boys' band class in which Donald played trombone. A few of the cards refer to Donald as his nickname, "Donnie." Most of them use his formal name of Donald, 15 labeled for Donnie, 7 for Ronnie. The stickers were used by the boys' schoolteachers to keep attendance and behaviors. Most days, the sticker was represented by a star, sometimes two. Other days, an American flag sticker marked the boys' presence in school. The dates range from the beginning of the school year, October 2, until May 29. The folder also includes a Christmas card addressed to an Elena Smith on the Pacific Limited Railroad en route to California. The envelope is marked with a "Special Delivery" notice and instructions to "not open until 6:00 on the train." The envelope also has a sticker that depicts a "By American Products" sign. The Christmas card advertises an Uncle Sam figure delivering Christmas cards on a train and the inside is inscribed with, "Hello there, Young America [sic]! GIVE Uncle Sam a hand by saving his defense Stamps To defend our land! This book will hold the stamps for you and if you save a lot, Then Uncle Sam will soon call you A first-class Patriot!" It also defines the Christmas as being one spent in Riverside, California.
