South Dakota Photographs, 1920's

Scope and content:

This series consists of snapshots from a personal collection from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The subjects are very likely connected to one of the "Colored Colonies" that were established in South Dakota after the Civil War when members of Buffalo Soldier cavalries remained there afterwards. These communities continued to develop during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when many homes were abandoned as people headed west during the Gold Rush. All photographs in this subseries are black and white.
