- Scope and content:
In this article produced by the M.L.A (Missouri Library Association) Quarterly titled "The Social Implications of the Introduction of Atomic Energy," Stickler sheds light on the scientific and social consequences of the atomic bomb produced by the United States in 1945 for use of bombing the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Throughout the article, Stickler discusses the capability of atomic energy as one of the most powerful entities created by man while also exploring the possibility of atomic energy becoming available for mechanical use during peacetimes. As for social consequences, Stickler tackles the question concerning the morality of using the bomb and how that ties into his role as a scientist who worked in its creation. Stickler also considers the responsibility placed on nations around the world as they become aware of the power of atomic energy and what that level of destruction means to future world wars that may or may not prophesize.
