- Scope and content:
In this article published by McGraw Hill Publishing Company in 1945, the magnitude of the atomic bomb is explored in relation to its scientific elements along with its effect on relationships between nations following World War II. By mostly focusing on the scientific component of the atomic bomb, this article provides great detail on how atoms are created and isolated and how those atoms are then able to release energy. The major elements discussed in this article are Uranium and Plutonium, as these were the two primary elements involved in the making of the two atomic bombs. This article includes diagrams regarding the process of splitting atoms along with diagrams explaining the process of isolating atoms. Towards the end of the article, the social and political significance of the bomb is discussed as the writer speaks to the possibility of atomic energy being used for commercial purposes and how that would compare to other energy sources such as coal, oil, and gases.
