- Scope and content:
This folder contains letters from Clifford Prince to his wife, Irene, as he gets deployed from Cinncinati, Ohio. In his first letters from April to May 1944, he describes his first days in the service staying in a hospital on the Great Lakes, Illinois where he worked in the kitchens while he received tests and treatments to see if he's fit to begin boot camp. He described a "bangs disease" that confuses the doctors and he received x-ray treatments for his chest, but the doctors can't seem to find anything wrong with him. Since the doctors can't find an ailment, he left for the U.S. Naval Training Station on May 24th, 1944. At boot camp, he drills from 8 until 4 and then cleans the barracks until 7, but they don't march on Sundays except to church. There are 33,000 people in his camp and 140 in his barrack.
