Item 3
Scope and content:

Bound volume, dark red buckram (contemporary binding, ca. 1940-1960); Spine title: Correspondence Log, 1864, Pensacola, Florida. This is a rebound volume; probably was a leather-bound journal book; pages are lined but are not numbered. Manuscript log of correspondence [copies of correspondence sent out by hospital], January 1, 1864 - October 17, 1865. Letters cover transmittal of death certificates, correspondence to the Commandant, Navy Yard, the employment of nurses and staff, and other matters. A number of letters are to commanding officers of Federal ships in Pensacola Bay concerning naval servicemen at the hospital; the January 4, 1864 letter is a long report describing the "new hospital building now being erected." This log covers the remaining days of the Civil War, under Federal occupation of Pensacola. Condition: first 20 letters have separated from the binding of the volume, having broken off; does not appear to have affected text noticeably; a number of repairs have been made with "Scotch" tape, leaving noticeable staining and discoloration. Overall condition is good. Approximately first 1/3 of volume is written in; latter 2/3 are blank. Pages are not numbered, but letters are in chronological order.
