- Scope and content:
This folder contains a manuscript written by Peter T. Suzuki, titled "Linguistic Change in a Unique Cohort: Isseis, Kibeis, and Niseis in the World War II." Suzuki makes an analysis on the linguistic effects of relocation and interment that Japanese Americans experienced during World War II. He gives information on the population of Japanese Americans during this time, including the different terms that were used to specify whether they were first or second generation, and the ones that were born in America but received education in Japan. Suzuki compares assembly centers and relocation camps and how their rules affected the internees' speech. Some of the linguistic effects included certain pronunciation of words, slang, and commonly used phrases. These all were dependent on factors such as gender, generation, and experience. Each location had its own type of speech. Suzuki also states that this speech was dropped after they left the camps as they wanted to assimilate to an American life.
