- Containers:
- 18.0033 - Box 1, Folder 001
- Scope and content:
This folder contains 34 letters responding to ads Carl Lyren published in Old Breed News and other locations. In the ad, Lyren expressed that he wanted to hear of the experiences of veterans from the battle of Peleliufor a book he was writing and requested veterans send their name, address, telephone number, and number of unit on Peleliuand he would contact them further with specific questions. Some of the responses contain only that information and are written on postcards or typed on slips of paper folded once and tucked into envelopes. Other responses span several pages and recount personal stories of closes calls or reiterate how their expectations of this battle were of a much shorter engagement. Also included in this folder is a clipping of the ad, copies of a few responses Lyren sent, three letters from a Gold Star mother, copies of book reviews, an excerpt from LIFE magazine, and two photographs.
The overall sentiment of the veterans in their letters is that of offering their help in any way possible; in addition to their own accounts, they recommend books and articles, offer personal photographs, share the names and contacts of others that should be contacted and generally commend Lyren for the undertaking.
