In 1970, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Ocean Service (NOS) were created. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey responsibilities were transferred to the National Ocean Service responsible for Geodetic Surveys and this part of the NOS was named the National Geodetic Survey.
