Events, 1967-2006
- Scope and content:
This series is divided into subseries by the type of event. University events begin the series and are arranged alphabetically. Recurring events, such as Commencement, are arranged chronologically with undated images placed at the end. Commencement photographs mainly document the platform party, however, more recent photographs include many more casual images of students. The 1973 visit by President Richard Nixon is documented here. Oversize color photographs are stored in the flat file; most of these show all the graduates in the Arena for 1986-1990 and 1997, but there is one image of a commencement ceremony in the Reflecting Pond. Small quantities of materials highlight smaller university events, such as anniversaries, and the Engineers' Fair. President's socials include such occasions as the Ice-Cream Social. Art displays include images and a news clipping concerning the theft of artwork on display in the library in the early 1970s. Homecoming celebrations are well-documented including the two events held in 1980. The first, in January, featured a basketball game against Eckerd College and had a 1920s theme. The second, in November, was the University's first football homecoming celebration and was entitled "Karribean Knights". Some Homecoming photographs were supplied by the Campus Activities Board and these show the work involved in organizing major events and the individuals who volunteered their time. Sports form the next large subseries arranged in alphabetical order with nothing to distinguish intercollegiate from intramural sports. These photographs include training and game shots as well as team photographs. An oversize color print of the Marching Knights outside Millican Hall is held in the flat file together with oversize football and baseball images. Cheerleaders include mascots. Portraits of individual student athletes and staff are held in Series I; however, groups of coaching staff are held in this series. Campus Activities Board events form the next subseries and include images of board directors at work and play. Fund-raising events follow arranged alphabetically and include major events such as the annual golf classic; various small fund-raising events are held in one folder at the end. Social events include such occasions as dinners and retirement celebrations again arranged alphabetically. Community events include events held on campus for the benefit of the community such as Fitness Day and events held off campus, but which the University supports such as the Orlando Shakespeare Festival. Finally, a miscellaneous subseries documents events for which there are few photographs.
