People, 1965-2008
- Scope and content:
Generally, images of individuals arranged alphabetically begin each subseries followed by groups of people and ending with unidentified images. Women who marry may appear under maiden and married names, and images of First Ladies are held with images of University Presidents. Where the number of photographs warrants a distinction, small groups are deemed to be those with five or fewer individuals in them. Where there are more than five prints of an individual, a separate folder has been allocated to them. This arrangement serves to highlight individuals who remained associated with the university for a long time or who were of particular significance to the university. Some individuals' images may be found in more than one folder. For instance, images of faculty members may be found under Excellence in Teaching Awards as well as under their name. The folder for the Staff Council includes candidates for office as well as elected officials. More images of people may be found in Series V, VI, and VII. Where faculty and students appear together in photographs, the image is filed under the name of the student. Clearly, students tend to become alumni so an individual may be found in either subseries. As well as individuals and groups, the Alumni subseries includes alumni events and images used to advertise products in the alumni magazine. The Board of Regents, later replaced by the board of Governors in 2002, and other such governing bodies that have administered Florida's Universities will be foung in the Board of Governors, Regents, and Trustees folders. Members of various advisory groups and Women's Club members follow. Donors are organized alphabetically by the name of the club or company if the company rather than the individual is the donor. Some donors are also students, alumni or foundation members so images of them may be found in other subseries. The presentation of the Foundation's charter is illustrated in the Foundation folder. Most of the government officials are Florida state politicians, but this subseries also includes images of national and local politicians who visited the University. Many significant individuals have spoken at University events. These include, but are not limited to Tommy Bell, Julian Bond, William F. Buckley, Lou Frey, Benjamin Hooks, Henry Kissinger, C. Everett Koop, Ann Landers, Amos Oz, Helmut Schmidt, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Susan Sontag, Hunter S. Thompson, Tennessee Williams and John Young. A variety of individuals have performed at the University including Larry Linville, Martha Quinn and the Bethune Cookman Gospel Choir. Visitors include a variety of people from notables such as Minnesota Twins owner Calvin Griffith, to local high school students. This series concludes with several folders containing photographs of people, which have little or no identification. Partially identified are images where the name of the person is known but not their relationship to the University. Some images of groups of students are oversize and may be found in the flat file.
