Scope and content:

This folder contains V-mail from Harold's mother, Lucy Blunk, sent to him while he was stationed in England from 1943 to 1945. Much like his wife, Lucy provides news of their family and friends in her letters as well as frequent encouragement to keep up morale. Similarly, she also wrote about the care packages she sent with clothes and presents, including a camera, to Harold. She wrote often about the movements of other enlisted family members and acted as a connection for them by passing along ever-changing wartime addresses. Lucy mentions to Harold when discussing possible future promotions in her September 8, 1944 letter was that his father, Frank, had served as a sergeant major of a "negro labor battalion" in World War I. She also comforts Harold over his growing hearing problems in her March 19, 1945 letter and informs him that it is not hereditary because his other deaf relatives had incidents that caused the issue, it did not develop over time.
