Drug Store Business

Scope and content:

One of the businesses that Dr. Avellanal invested in heavily was the drug store business. His first acquisition on record in this area is the Cosmopolitan Drug Store, which he purchased in 1909. Records of Dr. Avellanal's drug store holdings indicate much buying and selling, culminating in the formation of the Colonial Drug Company in 1916. Through this holding company, Avellanal controlled virtually all the drug stores in Spanish-speaking Tampa. Later, due to financial problems, Avellanal took on partners in several of the drug stores.
