Biographical Materials

Scope and content:

Contains biographical and historical materials for Jose Ramon Avellanal and the Avellanal family. Earliest documents include Jose Ramon's lesson books and grades dating to the mid-1880s. Materials pertaining to the San Pablo estate are also included. Dr. Avellanal, his brother, and his three sisters inherited the San Pablo Estate from their father. This large sugar cane farm was parceled and leased to approximately 20 to 30 sharecroppers. Much of the correspondence between Jose Ramon and his brother Evaristo involved the San Pablo estate. In 1917, Dr. Avellanal and his family sold the estate for $65,000. Until then, the estate provided Jose Ramon with income to finance his Tampa ventures. Other items of interest in this box include biographical sketches of Jose Ramon and Evaristo written by Jose Luis in the 1940s, and Dr. J.R. Avellanal's ledger of honorariums received, 1897-ca.1924.
