Alpha Files, 1968-2005.

Scope and content:

Alphabetical files include information on a variety of topics including national and state educational organizations, university legal matters and equal opportunity considerations. As the General Counsel was formerly known as Legal Counsel, both names appear in the folder title. The president also kept files on particular individuals and projects, programs and plans that affected the entire university, and his speeches. Of particular interest is a large group of files concerning intercollegiate athletics. Although most of these materials document the football program, there are also folders concerning women's sports and men's soccer. Many of the records concern the University's relationship with organizations such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Sunbelt Conference and the Atlantic Sun Conference. The latter was previously known as the Trans America Conference, and researchers should examine files under both headings. Dr. Hitt reviewed other institutions on behalf of the NCAA, and his work may be found in the folders entitled "Peer Reviews". While the reviews of UCF may be found under "Athletics Certification and Accreditation". Further information concerning athletics may be found in the Chronicle for Higher Education file. Activities of the fund raising organization, the Knight Boosters, are also documented within Intercollegiate Athletics. One folder concerning a United Way event appears here in addition to separate files on the United Way. Other topics in this series include legislative activities with an oversize print of the Floirda Capitol building, the Orange County Research and Development Authority, which made decisions that concerned Research Park, and the Equal Opportunity Open forum, which allowed members of the Hispanic community to express their opinions about their relationship with the University especially opportunities for Hispanic students. Further information concerning the Atlantic Center for the Arts may be found in Series II under "South Orlando Campus". Folders of Dr. Hitt's speeches also hold invitations for him to speak and the file on him contains information he needed to facilitate his transfer to the University. "Advertorials" were a form of advertising for the university. An awards file mostly concerns the nomination of Charles Reed for the State Leadership in Higher Education Award. A file on the Holiday Inn indicates that the university had an arrangement with the hotel to provide rooms for visiting dignitaries. The University Planning Commission file holds photographs of land being cleared for campus construction. Inauguration regrets shows the president declining invitations to the inauguration of other presidents. Local matters of interest to the University may also be found in this subseries, such as, the Alafaya Trail extension. "Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities" file includes images of speakers, such as, Linda Chapin and Kathryn Seidel. Further information on the Metro Orlando International Affairs Commission may be found under "Beth Barnes's Files."
