- Scope and content:
This photograph scrapbook follows Herbert J. Thurber Jr. who was assigned to LST 558 throughout its journey, starting in Linguyan Bay through Tokyo, Japan. It makes stops throughout the Philippines, New Guinea, Japan, and the Pacific Theatre. The cities visited were Linguyan Bay, Hollandia, Subic Bay, Lake Sentai, Pohy Wog, Sapporo, Yokosuka, Saipan, Aomori Honshu, Otaru, and Tokyo. In the scrapbook, it commemorates the places stopped and activities on and off the ship - such as what they did on base, the local population of the places visited, change of command ceremonies, a baby's funeral, surgical operations, landscapes, and cityscapes. In addition, there are pictures before several military operations - such as V.J. Day and Linguyan Gulf.
