Dr. Stepick received his B.A. in Anthropology at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and his Ph.D. in Social Sciences at the University of California at Irvine.","Dr. Stepick first came to FIU in 1981 and witnessed the influx of Haitian and Cuban refugees in Miami in the 1980s. Dr. Stepick was active in researching and lobbying for Haitian refugee rights, and increasing awareness about their situation and living conditions. Dr. Stepick has since been conducting research on the impact of immigration in Miami for the past twenty years. His co-authored book focusing on Miami,  City on the Edge , has won the Robert Park Award for the best book in Urban Sociology and the Anthony Leeds Award for the best book in Urban Anthropology.
