Correspondence, publications, notebooks, drawings, research materials, memorabilia and photographs show all aspects of their work including plant collecting, landscape designing and publishing. Photographs may be black and white or color prints, negatives or slides. Additional materials about the Fosters may be found in Series II and III.","\nSeries II: Subject Files, 1880-2003 contains catalogues, journals, photographs, memorabilia and correspondence that Michael Spencer brought together under his chosen subject headings and arranged alphabetically. Many of the materials in this series originally came from Mulford and Racine Foster, which means that there is some overlap with the previous series. Spencer's own collecting interest lay in documenting the importance of bromeliads in society, and he collected many common items that showed bromeliads, especially pineapples.","\nSeries III: Author Files, 1754-1997 includes a variety of media used for research, such as articles, books, magazines, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The youngest of eleven children, he was born in Calcutta, India on May 7, 1861. His father, the Great Sage (Maharishi) Devendranath Tagore, cofounded the Brahma Samaji religious reform movement. Rabindranath's family, though Brahmin, was not considered ritually \"pure\"; however they were wealthy, landed, and brilliant.\n At an early age Rabindranath showed considerable promise as a writer, specifically of poetry. He gave his first public reading at age 14. Rabindranath then went on to write over 3000 poems, 2000 songs, including the Indian National Anthem, 8 novels, 40 volumes of essays, and 50 plays. In 1913, Rabindranath Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, for his most famous work Gitanjali (Song Offerings), published in 1910. He subsequently began traveling widely in the United States, Japan, China, and Europe, spreading his doctrine of humanity's search for God and truth.\n In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore's desire for agricultural, educational, and health development in India prompted him to found Santiniketan (Abode of Peace). This began as an open air boys school and developed into a coed, multicaste International University, with a wide ranging curriculum. In 1906 Rabindranath sent his son Rathindranath to the University of Illinois at Urbana to study agriculture. Rabindranath, later in 1912-1913, accompanied his son to Urbana. In 1915 Rabindranath Tagore was knighted by the British Crown. Six years later, however, he relinquished his knighthood as a protest against the massacre of Indians who were demonstrating against the British Regime in India.\n Rabindranath Tagore died at age 80 in his native Calcutta, after a protracted illness on August 7, 1941. The majority of correspondence in this collection is between the two Tagores and Professor Arthur Seymour and his wife, Mayce Seymour. ","LGBT Ephemera Collection, USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL. ","The collection contains magazines, news clippings, photographs, ephemera, and audio/visual materials that document the historical rarity of the Asian male nude and the transition from the rarity of the Asian male nude to the more common proliferation of materials that can be found in later years. Even now when male Asian nudes are appearing with a limited frequency, the Asian body is portrayed in racial stereotypes, as being unworthy, lacking sexual endowment, or being submissive or passive. The collection illustrates the historical reality of this racial stereotype and the rarity of the nude Asian male in gay imagery in art as well as Western pornography. The gradual emergence from a near total absence from male imagery to the presently more widespread use of the Asian male nude is traced in detail. Also included in the collection are series on Asian body building, including martial arts, and Asian adult film stars Jordan Young and Brandon Lee.","Books related to the archival collection are cataloged individually and shelved in the Queer Literature Collection.
