He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor in Science degree, continued his education at the University of Florida, where he received his Master's degree in 1953, and then Duke University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1957.\nAfter working for a brief period of time in West Virginia, Attaway returned to Florida as research chemist at the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred.
