Glenn Westfall, a retired professor of history, donated his Research Files to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library during the summer of 2005 and a subsequent accession in 2006. The Subject Files follow an alphabetical arrangement and generally maintain the subject designations established by the donor. These boxes represent the largest portion of the collection (4.0 linear feet). Major holdings include research and primary source documents on the Alafia River area, the cigar industry in Florida, mutual aid societies, cultural activities in Ybor City, immigration patterns in the Tampa Bay region, and biographical files. Areas of special interest include clipping files that document activities in the Ocala during the 1880s and 1890s and records of gatherings from the Tampa Old Timers Association during the early 1970s. All manuscript materials in the second accession (boxes 10 and 11) fall into this category. Items in the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Holdings boxes illustrate the business activities of a company that acquired and sold land parcels during the boom-era days of the cigar industry. Financial records from the late 1920s and early 1930s offer a portrait of the company's assets and liabilities. Abstracts of title provide historical research for various blocks and tracts of land in Ybor City. Thiese boxes also include correspondence sent and received by Martin Carrabello, a Tampa attorney who oversaw the estate after some members of the Sanchez and Haya families had passed away. The Serials and Periodicals box contains various publications collected by Westfall. In addition to newspaper articles and clippings written in the mid and late 1970s about the status of Ybor City, researchers may also consult various issues of the Bulletin of the Suncoast Archaeological Society (coverage 1976-1980) and articles and papers written by Westfall. In the Cigar Art and Miscellaneous Materials reside two distinct types of materials. The cigar art includes lithographic prints and images from cigar manufacturers and printers. This box also contains records of artillery training exercises at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the First World War. One item comprises the Government Documents series: the bound \"Register of Prisoners Confined in the County Jail of Hillsborough County, Florida,\" for the years 1904 though 1909. An index in the front provides the accession number of the prisoner; with that number, researchers can examine basic information about the prisoner, his physical makeup, the crime committed, and the disposition of the case. Attaway enrolled at Florida Southern College in the fall of 1947, where he majored in chemistry\nbut also took citrus classes so that he could help his father in their groves. There he worked under Dr. Louis MacDowell, the center's first Director of Scientific Research and with C.D. Atkins. Atkins and he\ncollaborated on three patents concerning \"essence for enhancing the flavor of citrus juices.\"Attaway developed a program to define orange juice quality by the content of desirable components, which contributed to taste and flavor. He represented the Florida citrus industry before\nthe EPA, OSHA, and other agencies regarding proposals to cancel the use of EDB (Ethylene dibromide) as a quarantine fumigant for the Caribbean fruit fly. He led several years of research and efforts to reduce worker exposure to fumigants and reduced pesticide residues on citrus. This helped to\nperfect the use of cold treatment as the main infestation treatment for the Caribbean fruit fly. Attaway also authored many publications, including two books A History of Florida Citrus Freezes, 1997, and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture, 1999. Named for Cuban heroes Jose Martí and General Antonio Maceo, the organization functioned as a social and recreational society for members of Tampa's Afro-Cuban community of cigar workers. Although the organization originally served both Black and white Cubans as the Club Nacional Cubano, Octubre 10, an era of segregation forced the group to split into two separate societies- the Círculo Cubano and Los Libres Pensadores Martí-Maceo. The first official meeting of Los Libres Pensadores (\"the freethinkers\") took place October 26, 1900 at the home of Cuban immigrants Ruperto and Paulina Pedroso. The organization eventually merged with La Unión, an Afro-Cuban society in West Tampa, to form La Sociedad la Unión Martí- Maceo. "," \nLike many mutual aid societies of the time, La Unión Martí-Maceo provided complete medical care for members and benefits for sickness and death, in addition to a variety of social and cultural activities. In 1908, the society built a two-story brick headquarters at 11th Street and 6th Avenue in Ybor City that contained an auditorium, dance hall and club rooms. This structure served as a center for the Afro-Cuban community of Tampa until it was raised in 1965 for Urban Renewal. In 1989, House Bill 889 (Florida State Statute Chapter 89-382), entitled \"An act relating to historic preservation; formally recognizing the cultural role of certain Latin societies in the historical development of Ybor City and specifically recognizing the accomplishments of La Unión Martí-Maceo,\" passed the state house of representatives and was signed into law by then Florida Governor Robert Martinez.  The bill gives protection to La Sociedad la Unión Martí-Maceo, in recognition of the historical loss of their original building and states that the \"City of Tampa and Ybor City are requested to take any and all steps necessary to preserve the headquarters of La Unión Martí-Maceo and protect it from the consequences of the urban renewal process\" (Florida House of Representatives 1989, 158-64-1-9). The society is now located at 1226 E. 7th Avenue in Ybor City, Tampa, FL and continues to sponsor social activities for its members. The organization's contemporary goals include preserving the history and heritage of Tampa's Cuban community and helping protect the multicultural resources of Ybor City.","Complete","Greenbaum, S.
