After graduating from Plant High School in 1947, Hawes attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. While attending the university, Hawes was a campus correspondent for the  Tampa Daily Times  while working on his degree in journalism.","Upon completion of his degree, Hawes joined the  Times  staff in 1950. He then moved to the  Tampa Morning Tribune  two years later where he started as a police reporter. In 1960 he became the Sunday feature editor. An index in the front provides the accession number of the prisoner; with that number, researchers can examine basic information about the prisoner, his physical makeup, the crime committed, and the disposition of the case. The Films and Media Materials includes three films. Two of these films describe the cigar industry in Ybor City and exist in 16mm format.
