He lectured extensively on American children's literature and authored four books and more than 70 articles on diverse aspects of boys' and girls' popular fiction.","Sources:
"All Inductees, 1996-2004, to be Honored on New Hall of Fame Wall." Communitas: MVCC Faculty/Staff Newsletter. 10/4/2004, pp. 1, 3.
Hartman, Krista. "Mohawk Valley Community College Authors: Faculty and Staff: A Bibliography." [Utica: Mohawk Valley Community College, 2007].
"MVCC Dean/Professor Emeritus Authors Book on Children's Literature." Communitas: MVCC Faculty/Staff Newsletter. 3/13/2006, p. 1.
"MVCC 60th Anniversary Snapshots, MVCC 1946-2006." Communitas: MVCC Faculty/Staff Newsletter. 11/20/2006, p. 1.","Note written by PEC, 2007

published

Other Descriptive Information
published

John T. Bound volumes cover more than one academic year.","Throughout its history, the Florida State University (FSU) Graduate Policy Committee considered university-wide policies affecting graduate education. In 1936, the committee was known as the Florida State College for Women (FSCW) Graduate Committee. The records indicate that the committee dealt with many different issues, such as acceptance or rejection of student theses; student suitability for continued graduate education; adoption and formation of college-wide graduate policy; and curriculum catalog content.
By the early 1940s, the Committee's responsibilities remained the same, except that it was no longer responsible for deciding each student's suitability as a graduate candidate, nor was it involved in the acceptance or rejection of each prospectus. On December 12, 1944, the Committee's name was changed to the Graduate Council.
When FSCW became FSU in 1947, the Graduate Council's responsibilities included the awarding of fellowships, assistantships and other similar financial aid disbursements. From 1954 to 1957, its members were appointed by the University President and Dean. The Council increasingly recommended items for inclusion in the University's budget.
From 1959 to 1963, the Council's membership was elected by the graduate faculty from that department with each department having one representative. The Dean of the Graduate School presided over meetings. The Council was responsible for matters of policy as well as approval of candidates for graduate degrees. In the late 1960s, the Council changed its name to the Graduate Policy Council.
By 1974, the Council was composed of 12 faculty and one graduate student. The faculty representatives were chosen by the Faculty Senate Steering Committee, and the graduate student was appointed by the president of student government. On October 30, 1978 the Council's name changed to the Graduate Policy Committee. By 1984, the number of graduate students included in the Committee was increased to two.
Early members of the committee included Ruth Connor, Guy Diffenbaugh, and Paul F. Finner. Later members included Louis Shores, Mark H. DeGraff, Milton W. Carothers, and Dean John Broward Culpepper. On one occasion, President Doak Campbell addressed the committee to discuss the merits of establishing a program for a master's degree without the thesis requirement.","Portions of collection available online?: No","Processed by Charles Danner in September 2007.","The collection is primarily composed of the minutes of the Florida State University (FSU) Graduate Policy Committee. Other documents include correspondence, student records, indexes, budgets, and reports.
The great majority of the papers cover the period 1936 to 1958. Gaps exist between July 1956 to November 1958, April 1959 to March 1960, June 1961 to January 1964, and January 1964 to November 1968. While there are some substantial gaps in the collection, the FSU Graduate Policy Committee minutes is a valuable source to a researchers studying the University's academic policies and procedures during the middle to last quarter of the 20th Century.","To request permission to quote, publish, broadcast or otherwise reproduce from the archives, please contact Heritage & University Archives, Florida State University Libraries, Tallahassee, Florida. On December 7, 1931, the Florida Grapefruit Canners Association (FGCA) was officially established during its first meeting. C.E. Street was named President and Clifford Charles "C.C." Rathbun was named permanent Secretary after having
served the group for four years. At this time, the organization was based in Tampa, Florida. In 1932, FGCA began working with the U.S.D.A. Citrus Products Station, which was established in 1931 in Winter Haven, Florida, to establish standards on canned grapefruit. This cooperation would extend beyond the establishment of these standards as the FGCA financially supported and advocated for the laboratory. The Florida Citrus Commission (FCC), established in 1935, would also join FGCA in supporting the laboratory.","Florida Canners Association (1937-1978):","In 1937, FGCA changed its name to Florida Canners Association (FCA); the organization was chartered and incorporated on August 13. During the 1940s, FCA continued to support the USDA laboratory in Winter Haven alongside the FCC, including Dr. L.G. MacDowell's research into packing citrus products in glass. In 1950, under President C. Howard Sweatt, FCA reached 100% participation from all canning companies within the state of Florida. In 1951,
FCA took over the Canners League of Florida, which had been established in 1948, as well as that organization's informational services. In 1956, FCA moved their headquarters to Winter Haven, Florida after the city had donated land to the Association. In 1961, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held hearings regarding the standards of orange juice. Director Marvin H. Walker (President, 1951-1952) provided testimony and Secretary C.C. Rathbun was also present for these hearings. In 1962, the long-serving C.C.
Rathbun retired as Executive Vice President after having served the organization since its beginning. He remained as a consultant to the organization and served as Chairman on the Board of Directors. Warren E. Savant succeeded Rathbun as the Executive Secretary for FCA and later became Executive Vice President himself.","Citrus Processors Association (1941-1964):","In 1941, the Citrus Processors Association (CPA) was formed, and by 1950, the organization was based out of Lakeland, Florida. However, while at first independent from FCA, the two organizations began working closely together in 1951 when FCA took over the reporting of statistics regarding citrus processing and citrus processing by-products. FCA Executive Secretary C.C. Rathbun also served as the Manager of CPA. By 1952, CPA had moved their
organization over to Tampa, where FCA was based at the time. When FCA made the move to Winter Haven in 1956, CPA followed and was housed in the same building as FCA. On April 16, 1964, CPA and its activities were fully absorbed into the Florida Canners Association. At the same time as this merger, the Citrus By-Products Committee was formed out of the directors of CPA to continue serving the citrus pulp industry and its interests. ","Florida Citrus Processors Association (1978 – Present):","On May 25, 1978, the Florida Canners Association changed its name to Florida Citrus Processors Association in order to better reflect the members of the organization. In 1984, Executive Vice President Savant retired and Clifford C. Beasley, Jr. assumed the role. In 1999, Lisa Young Rath became the Executive Vice President following Beasley's resignation. Rath would hold the position until she resigned from the organization in 2006. In 2000, Florida Citrus Processors Association II (FCPA II) submitted its first state corporation
filing, and in 2001, FCPA merged with FCPA II. In 2006, FCPA II reverted to its original name of Florida Citrus Processors Association and Kristen Carlson became Executive Director of the newly merged organization. However, in the same year, FCPA lost most of its staff and its building due to spending cuts. In 2013, Ansley Watson, Jr., the son of former FCA President Ansley Watson, Sr. (1955-1956), took over as Executive Director. He served until 2018, when
Kristen Carlson resumed her role as Executive Director. As of 2021, the organization is currently housed in the Tampa offices of MacFarlane, Ferguson, & McMullen where Executive Director Carlson is an attorney.
Throughout the years, FCPA has worked with various state and federal organizations, including, but not limited to, the Florida Citrus Commission (now the Florida Department of Citrus), Florida Citrus Mutual, the Citrus Experiment Station (now known as the Citrus Research Experiment Center) in Lake Alfred, the US Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Canners Association. Also affiliated with FCPA was the now defunct Florida Citrus Processors for Good Government, Inc. campaign finance committee. As of 2021, FCPA works in collaboration with the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame each year to host the Florida Citrus Processors Association "O.J. ","This collection is in an offsite storage location. Please contact lib-specialcollections@fsu.edu with requests for access or for more information.","During the early years when Florida State University was the Florida Female College (1905-1909), former Dean of Arts and Sciences Dr. William G. Dodd, in his unpublished manuscript, "Florida State College for Women: Notes on the Formative Years," noted that the early library was located in one of the classrooms in the main building whose floor space was "completely taken up by two tables and a dozen or so chairs." In 1907, Florida Female College President Albert Murphree made a request to the Florida Board of Control and the Florida Legislature for a separate library building, but it was not until 1923 that the West wing of the new library was completed in Dodd Hall. In 1929, construction was finally completed on the entire building.
According to "Louise Richardson and the Florida State University Library," the book collection in the institution's early years grew slowly. While early records did not describe the size of the library, the Florida Board of Education set aside annually an amount to purchase additional books. In spring 1903, an appropriation of several thousand dollars made possible the purchase of 3,000 new books. College faculty assisted the Librarian, Mary W. Apthorp (librarian from 1903-1912), in selecting these books. Fields of knowledge included English literature, philology, linguistics, Greek, Latin, French, German, Spanish, Italian, economics, sociology, psychology, religion, chemistry, music, and oratory. The Library was particularly strong in Shakespeare and owned five notable editions of Shakespeare's works, one of which was the famous variorum edition. From 1903-1909, circulation of materials averaged 600 books per month, even though enrollment at this time average around 300 students. The periodical collection contained about 50 titles, including publications from England, Germany, France, and Spain.
By 1909, the collection had grown to 6,000 volumes covering every field of human knowledge. By 1911, it contained 8,000 volumes. But for the next few years, collection growth was slow with only a few hundred added each year. However, the number of periodicals increased to over 100 and representative newspapers published in Florida were added. When Louise Richardson became Librarian in 1922, according to the 1922-1923 FSCW Catalog, the library collection contained 16,000 bound volumes. These volumes included not only well-selected, up-to-date reference books, but also the best general material necessary for the proper development of the courses of instruction offered.
During World War II, the reference collection improved in breadth and depth. While the emphasis had traditionally been to acquire basic bibliographies, other subject areas took on increasing importance. The Library's biennial report for 1944-1946 states that "As America moves to take a leading part in international cooperation, our library must expand its materials in international relations, foreign languages, and cultural and economic resources of other countries." This growth was reflected in the acquisition of government documents and handbooks, bibliographical and biographical as well as statistical and descriptive. Special emphasis was placed on filling Latin American needs. Other materials, including journals, reports, and miscellaneous documents were acquired from various divisions of the United Nations.
Prior to 1947, more attention was paid to the development of an undergraduate library. In 1947, when Florida State College for Women became Florida State University, emphasis shifted to the development of materials for graduate and professional study and research. Subdivisions for art services, federal documents, and maps were created, and specialists in these fields were hired. In addition, the reference book collection grew steadily in quantity and quality. Reference works included national, subject, and general bibliographies; notable foreign dictionaries; general and biographical encyclopedias; serial sets in special fields; and documentary source material, particularly in history, English literature, political science, and publications of learned groups. Resources complementing the book collection included microfilms and microcards with machines for their use, photographs, photocopies, and newspapers.
During the early 1950s, according to its biennial report for 1950-1952, the Library experienced crowded conditions with a nonfunctional, inadequate building and reference materials scattered throughout the building, "making integration of services extremely difficult." The report states that "the space problem was so acute that two things must occupy the space of one." In spite of these problems, however, the Library continued to successfully acquire, arrange, publicize, and provide service to its students and faculty. In addition, use of the collections increased. When Miss Richardson stepped down as head librarian in 1953 to become the Head of the Library's Special Collections Department (1953-1960), a new building was planned. Named for FSU's president, the Robert Manning Strozier Library was completed in 1956 and opened at the beginning of the summer session in June.
By the early 1960s, Director Orwin Rush noted that the increase in the student population since the Library opened had out-distanced the library's capacity to provide first-class service, and should be enlarged by 1965 to twice its present capacity. While operating funds devoted to the Library had increased appreciably in the last few years, he felt that they were still inadequate for the research, creative, and graduate programs of a major university. In January 1966, ground was broken on a seven-story addition to Strozier Library to provide room for shelving at least a million additional books and double the seating capacity. The use of compact shelving made it possible to store these volumes in addition to the nearly 700,000 volumes already housed in the Library.","Portions of collection available online?: No","Processed by Burt Altman in October 2007.","The handwritten accession books record all commercially-published books, government documents, and journal titles of publications acquired by the FSCW and FSU Library collection from 1909-1951.
