Mr. Hidalgo was sentenced to five years in prison in 1967 for allegedly planning to leave Cuba illegally after escaping from a forced labor camp. Released the following year, he studied history, philosophy, and political economy at the University of Havana and published Orígenes del Movimiento Obrero y del Pensamiento Socialista en Cuba (Origins of the Worker's Movement and of Socialist Thought in Cuba), a text used in universities throughout the island. In 1981, he was sentenced to prison for the publication of Cuba, El Estado Marxista y La Nueva Clase (Cuba: The Marxist State and the New Class), Hidalgo spent a year of solitary confinement in the so-called Rectángulo de la muerte (Rectangle of Death) a special section at maximum security Combinado del Este Prison in Havana.","Released from isolation after one year, Hidalgo began to collaborate with other political prisoners who were the founding members of the CCPDH, the first human rights group in Cuba. After founding the Liga Cívica Martiana in 1986, Hidalgo was frequently interviewed in jail by representatives from various international human rights organizations and foreign journalists. He was released in 1988 thanks to the intervention of Cardinal John O'Connor from New York, Hidalgo settled in Miami where he founded Cuba en Vivo y en Directo (Cuba Live and Direct), the first U.S. radio program to feature the perspectives of dissidents from the island. In 1990 he founded the Information Bureau of the Human Rights Movement in Cuba and began to publish various periodicals which were secretly distributed to the island and circulated among members of the dissident movement. In 1994 Hidalgo published Disidencia: Segunda revolucion cubana? (Dissidence: the Second Cuban Revolution?), a history of the Cuban dissident movement.","Note written by Annia Gonzalez"],"scopecontent_html_tesm":["\u003cp\u003eThe Cuban Human Right Collection date from 1961 to 2004, primarily covering issues of human rights on Cuba.
