Individual series are devoted to Collins' years in the House of Representatives and the Senate, the Governorship, the Chairmanship of the Democratic National Convention, his tenure as president of the National Association of Broadcasters, appointments as both Director of Community Relations and Undersecretary of Commerce, an unsuccessful bid for the Senate in 1968, and his years in retirement. Within each series, the papers are arranged categorically by box. Pictures, films, and memorabilia are arranged in separate series as well.","LeRoy Collins was born in Tallahassee on March 10, 1909. He graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee and received a degree in law from Cumberland University in Birmingham, Alabama. He returned to Tallahassee and married Mary Call Darby, the great-granddaughter of Richard Call who had twice served as Territorial Governor of Florida.","Soon after his marriage to Mary Call, Collins was elected as the representative of Leon County to the Florida House of Representatives in 1934. He served in this position until 1940 when he filled the term of the late William Hodges in the Florida Senate. Collins purchased the Call family home \"The Grove\" in 1941 and shortly thereafter resigned his position from the Florida Senate to join the Navy in 1942. He was reelected to the Florida Senate upon his return from World War II in 1946. He was reelected in 1950, serving until 1954 when a special election was held to fill the remaining two years in the term of the late Governor Daniel T. McCarty, who had died in office in 1953.","Collins Served as Florida's thirty-third Governor from 1955 to 1961 where he dealt with the complicated social and political issues of the time. His two greatest issues were the dismantling of segregation and the process of political patronage, both of which he employed a liberal diplomacy. Collins was also integral in the development of the Florida University system, including the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is considered by many historians to be one of the first liberal Southern Democrats to transform the political agenda of the South and is thought to be one of the best governors in Florida's History.","Collins served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 1960, where he was a possible candidate for the presidential nomination due to his leadership position amongst Southern Governors and his strong stance on Civil Rights which would attract Northern liberals, however he did not seek the nomination. Upon leaving the governor's office, he became President of the National Association of Broadcasters, where he served until 1964. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Collins to be the first Director of Community Relations, a government office created out of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was followed by an appointment to the Undersecretary of Commerce in 1965 by President Johnson.","Following his service in the federal government, Collins sought reelection to the Florida Senate in 1968. He won the primary but lost in the general election. His progressive stand for Civil Rights and his highly publicized role in the Selma, Alabama march while Director of Community Relations is credited with having cost him the 1968 Senate election.","Upon his retirement from public service, Collins retired from his law firm in Tampa in which he had been a partner. He then returned to \"The Grove\" in Tallahassee where he remained active in the community and was also a guest contributor on politics to the St. Petersburg Times until his death from cancer in 1991","Note written by JT, 2011","Thomas LeRoy Collins Papers, Special Collections, Robert Manning Strozier Library, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida.","The materials comprising the Collins papers range in date from the 1940s to the 1980s, with concentrations in Collins' terms as Governor and materials related to his 1968 unsuccessful Senatorial campaign. The collection consists of 344 manuscript boxes, approximately 200 linear feet of papers which include and are not limited to correspondence files, working papers, reports, campaign research, memoranda and speeches. Early in his career, Pepper was a progressive minded liberal who sponsored legislation to promote equal rights, civil rights, workers' rights and the Lend-Lease Act. During and after World War II, Pepper became a driving force for the establishment of the National Institutes of Health, a system of government-sponsored medical research facilities.\n Much later in his life and career, he gained international fame as an advocate of older persons rights, health care, and for strengthening and protecting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other government sponsored programs on behalf of millions of Americans.\n Prior to his death, Pepper donated the bulk of his vast collection of official and personal papers to the Florida State University. It was his express wish that his collection is made available to researchers and scholars.","The Mildred and Claude Pepper Collection was donated by Congressman Claude Pepper to the Florida State University Libraries in 1979. Subsequent donations were made during the 1980s, and additional materials were acquired following his death in 1989. In addition, there are files of his personal correspondence, speeches, photographs, recordings, and memorabilia. Also included are the personal papers, photographs, recordings, and memorabilia of his wife, Mildred Irene Webster Pepper. Mrs. Pepper always took a deep interest in public affairs and in helping her husband in his political career. She vigorously supported medical research, urban beautification, conservation, and actively participated in charitable and humanitarian organizations. There are also personal papers of the Pepper/Webster family, largely consisting of correspondence from parents, brothers, sisters, and other family members.","These materials document the political and personal life of one of the most politically active individuals throughout most of this century, and in terms of size, content, and national significance, they have been compared to prestigious presidential collections, including the Papers of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In addition to its value to historical research, these materials will enable current policy makers to build upon Claude Pepper's achievements as they continue to focus on his unfinished work. Because of his legacy, it is vital that the Claude Pepper Collection should always be accessible and preserved for future generations of scholars and researchers. Personal letters from Winston Churchill, Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and John F. Kennedy are among the treasures to be found here. The photographs include many individuals of historical significance, such as Pope Paul VI, Albert Einstein, and Martin Luther King, Jr. There are also recordings of such political notables as Lyndon Johnson, Tip O'Neill, and Hubert Humphrey. The Pepper Collection not only documents the career of one of the most politically active individuals of this century, it reflects the changes that have taken place in every area of American life. Leeper was the founder of the Atlantic Center of the Arts, which resides in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and she was also crucial to the creation of Canaveral National Seashore and the Spruce Creek Preserve. In 1999, Doris Leeper was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame; like artists Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway.","Leeper was born on April 4th, 1929 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up in Charlotte where she graduated from high school with an honors degree in 1947. This led to her admittance to Duke University for a pre-med track - this is where Leeper acquired the nickname \"Doc\". After some push from mentor and professor Charles Sibley, Leeper switched her major to Art History, which she graduated with honors in 1951. Post-graduation, Leeper moved to Atlanta to work in screen printing and work on her art during off-time.","Leeper moved to Eldora, Florida in 1960 after visiting a few years prior and falling in love with naturalistic aesthetic of the area. Once in Eldora, Leeper really began her push for environmental change; starting with voting \"no\" for the addition of a paved road in Eldora. She continued to push for environmental action to happen along the coast - pushing for the creation of the Canaveral National Seashore. After a long fight, where President Richard Nixon refused to sign into law any more National Parks, President Gerald Ford signed the Canaveral National Seashore into law on January 1st, 1975.","Leeper then moved her focus on the idea of creating an Interdisciplinary Artist Residency. She created the Atlantic Center of the Arts in 1977 - where artists from all backgrounds came to mentor other artists. During the build, her focus on environmentalism was still front and center. Leeper told friend and architect Will Miller to cut down as few trees and to disrupt as little nature as possible. Miller did exactly that, creating a haven for artists to feel connected to nature and themselves. Leeper's art was one-of-a-kind, focusing on using spray paints instead of acrylic or oil, or the use of conventional brushes. Most of her art work is so unique it is not able to be restored due to the process of her art style. She, later in her career, migrated more towards sculptures, focusing on harsh-dramatic lines.","Leeper received an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from Stetson University on May 11th, 1997. She also received an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from her Alma Mater, Duke University, on May 18th, 1997. A few years later in 1999, Leeper was placed in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame - with artists like Ray Charles and Ernest Hemingway. In 1990, Leeper discovered a lump in her breast that quickly disappeared before obtaining a biopsy. In 1993, that lump returned, and it was confirmed to be cancerous. Please contact lib-specialcollections@fsu.edu with requests for access or for more information.","Doak Sheridan Campbell, the third president of Florida State College for Women (1941-1957), was born near Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas, on November 16, 1888. He was the son of a country physician, Edward Campbell and his wife, Elizabeth. It was from his great uncle, a Presbyterian minister, Samuel Doak, that young Campbell received his name.","Doak Campbell attended elementary and high school in Arkansas, graduating in 1905. Immediately after graduation, he obtained a teacher's license and began teaching in summer school. After a year in the \"normal department\" of the high school, he left to attend Ouachita College at Arkadelphia, Arkansas. By his senior year he had decided upon a teaching career. He graduated in 1911 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and major emphasis in music and speech. He was the president of his graduating class, an inter-collegiate debater and orator, and a distance runner. Upon graduation he became superintendent of school at Columbus, Arkansas.","In 1913 he married Helen Gray Smith, and to them two children were born, Doak, Jr., and Elizabeth Caroline. Mrs. Campbell passed away in 1938.","In 1916 he became associated with Central College, Conway, Arkansas as a chemistry instructor. By 1920 he had become president. It was at this time that his work in junior college began. Central College under his guidance changed from a floundering four year institution to a creditable two year junior college.","In 1928 he graduated from George Peabody with a master's degree. After receiving the Ph.D. in 1930 from Peabody he was appointed to the faculty. In 1934 Dr. Campbell became director of the division of survey and field services, and in 1938 he was also appointed to the position of dean of the graduate school He held these positions until he resigned to accept the presidency at Florida State College for Women in September, 1941.","Shortly before coming to Tallahassee, he was married to Miss Edna Simmons of Mississippi.","By legislative act Florida State College for Women became Florida State University on July 1, 1947. Overnight it became an undergraduate, professional, and graduate university for men and women. Under his tutelage he saw the graduate school grow from eleven students in 1945 to eight hundred sixty-one by 1956, making it the ninth largest graduate school in the South. A broader look at Florida State University can be obtained by reading Dr. Campbell's book, A University in Transition .","After serving as president at Florida State University for sixteen years, Dr. Campbell retired June 30, 1957, and remained in Tallahassee until his death on March 23, 1973. Though retired, he was an active participant in many educational projects, serving on educational boards, governors' commissions on education, and as visiting professor.","In addition to his work in education, Dr. Campbell was an active layman in the Baptist church. He served in a number of capacities on committees, council, and commissions of the Southern Baptist Convention.","Dr. Campbell held membership in many professional, fraternal, civic, and religious organizations and societies. Also to his credit were many published papers, journal articles, and books.","Karl O. Kuersteiner stated at the Faculty Dinner in 1957, \"...In order to work successfully with such a complex phenomena, a college president must be a person of many parts, with many friends, and with a keen business and diplomatic sense...these are cited as the guiding forces behind the record of Doak Sheridan Campbell at Florida State University.\"","Processed by Sara Buckmaster and Shirley Fogle, Fall 1974. Completed December 1974. Additional materials were processed in October 1978.","This collection consists mainly of papers connected with Doak S. Campbell's years at Florida State University and those after his retirement. His broad educational affiliations and religious works are reflected in this collection. Includes biographical sketches, newspaper clippings, speeches, correspondence, books, writings, musical scores, invitations, dedications and related publications. Contains MSS 78-56.","Select materials from the Campbell Collection have been digitized and are available through the FSU Digital Library .","To request permission to quote, publish, broadcast or otherwise reproduce from the archives, please contact Heritage \u0026 University Archives, Florida State University Libraries, Tallahassee, Florida. Researchers must obtain separate permission from the copyright holders of material held within University Archives collections for which the institution does not hold copyright.","This collection contains materials related to the life and career of Doak Sheridan Campbell.
