Included within these notes are sketches and hand-drawn maps of the sieges of Verona and Gaeta in Italy. In addition, a history of Napoleon's early career based on documents and accounts during the years of the Revolution and the Directory are included along with notes on the siege of Toulon in 1793. Also contained within the Papers are letters and documents concerning the Army of the Rhine in 1800. Throughout the collection are numerous letters and official correspondence with various officials and generals of the Republic and Empire.\n \tSources from the post-Napoleonic period include a report to Louis Philippe on the condition of Lyons in 1831. Several documents dealing with Pelet's tenure as director of the archives of the Dépôt de la guerre are contained in extracts from 1830 to 1832. A large assortment of notes by Pelet from post-war interviews with many of the most important personages of the Empire are included in the Papers. Also contained in the Pelet Papers are numerous legal documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports, military service records, and a will. Stanley Davis was born September 26, 1925, in Georgetown, Pennsylvania. Though he was initially turned down due to a hernia, Davis joined the Army on May 21, 1945, just as the war was ending. He was the fifth member of his family to join the Army, following in the footsteps of his older brothers. One of Davis' brothers had been stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed, which Davis said was a time of great apprehension in the family. Davis went to Camp Croft, South Carolina for training and later to Fort Ord, California. Davis trained for an invasion in Japan, but the atomic bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki before Davis was supposed to go to Japan. Instead, Davis reenlisted for three years in the Transportation Corps in the European theater. During his time in Berlin, Stanley met Elsie Boehnke and the two married on December 17th, 1946.","Elsie's family was German-American and was trapped in Germany during and after the war. She was born in New York to German parents. The family moved back to Germany in 1938. Elsie was classified for a time as a displaced person (DP). She discusses her experiences as a DP, focused mostly on rationing, which made it difficult to acquire needed goods. Mrs. Davis discussed the conditions in Germany in 1938-1939. Though her family did not support Hitler or his regime, there was a widespread fear of concentration camps for German dissidents which forced the family to feign support of the regime. She discusses the bombings in Berlin and experiences in East Prussia.","Stanley and Elsie Davis returned to the United States on July 17th, 1948. They share stories of the Berlin Airlift. Elsie's parents were able to return to the United States in 1950 and lived with Stanley and Elsie until they passed away. Stanley Davis died on March 14, 2012. He died in April of 2004 at the age of 81. He is fondly remembered by students and colleagues as the greatest snare drum player that ever lived and as a life-long lover of circus music. ","In a 2004 interview, with New York Times writer George James, Barbara Bailey reminisces that in the early 1960's, through a colleague at the Philharmonic, Buster Bailey met Merle Evans, the music director of the Ringling Bros and Barnum \u0026 Bailey Circus band, and Red Floyd, its drummer, and they became good friends. From this point on, whenever the circus was in New York, Merle Evans arranged for him to receive circus passes and Mr. Bailey attended whenever he could, absorbing how the circus band supported circus acts. He became so knowledgeable that when Red Floyd took ill one day in the mid 1960's, Mr. Evans turned to Mr. Bailey to take his place. Buster sat in for three days, happily playing drum rolls for thrilling acts and climaxing with a rim shot. For Buster, it was the biggest thrill of his life.","Buster Bailey's last recording, for Angel Records in 1993, was a collection of circus songs, Under the Big Top, with a group he assembled named the Great American Main Street Band. ","After 42 years with the Philharmonic, Buster Bailey retired to Sarasota, Florida.
