He served with Florida troops during Native American uprisings in 1855-56 and in the Confederate Army from 1861-1865. Captain Black served and was wounded in the Battle of Chickamaugua. In 1864, he became the County Tax Assessor of Liberty County, Florida and continued in this capacity for two years until moving to Leon County. He was elected Clerk of the Legislature in 1868 and also served several years as County Commissioner in Leon County.
