Two years after graduating high school, he was inducted into the U.S. Navy in June of 1939. After receiving training at the San Diego Naval Training Station, Burzynski traveled with the U.S. Navy to a variety of locations, including the South Pacific, South America, and South Africa. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he operated mostly in the Philippines stationed on the  USS Louisville . He was discharged in June of 1946 with the rank of Chief Electrician's Mate. Following discharge, he attended Anderson College with his wife Catherine. He served as a radioman on the USS  Franklin . He served in the Pacific Theater. When the USS  Franklin  was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft off the coast of Kyushu, Japan, Dodaro was responsible for looking for bodies. After his service he received his pilot's license and became a 2nd grade detective for the New York City police department where he served for 21 years.
