Following this, she pursued advanced studies at the Tuskegee Institute, ultimately graduating with her masters from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Her degrees earned were all in education. Her professional career unfolded as a distinguished educator in the Duval County Public School system, where she imparted knowledge to elementary school students and dispensed her expertise in high school history at Matthew Gilbert High School over a span of 28 years.","Beyond the confines of the classroom, Mathis demonstrated a fervent commitment to civil rights, rendering substantial service to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Instrumental in spearheading voter registration initiatives and orchestrating local events, her advocacy extended to membership in the League of Women Voters. The local NAACP chapter, recognizing her indomitable dedication, established an annual community service award in her honor. In 1967, Mathis etched her name in history as one of the first women and African Americans elected to the Jacksonville City Council.","Her legislative endeavors during her tenure on the City Council were indicative of her unwavering commitment to societal equity. Initiatives included the proposal for a Citizens' Police Review Board, advocacy for freely accessible public toilets, championing equal job opportunities in public agencies, and the advocacy for reduced bus fares for senior citizens. In 1977, Mathis assumed the mantle of founder for the Minority Women's Coalition (MWC), an organization designed to nurture the comprehensive development of women through educational and professional avenues while encouraging civic engagement. The MWC's core mission is geared towards the enhancement of educational opportunities through an annual scholarship awards program and the provision of emergency assistance to vulnerable families facing existential threats.","Acknowledging Mathis's formidable contributions to education, a Jacksonville school was christened the Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School in her honor. The campaign to immortalize Mathis's legacy was led by her sister, Grace Brooks Solomon. Solomon was an advocate for racial equality and education much like her sister. Subsequently, Solomon assumed the presidency of the MWC. Sallye Brooks Mathis passed away in 1982 at the age of 70, leaving an enduring legacy in Jacksonville that secured her a distinguished position in the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame.","See also: ","Grace Brooks Solomon Papers, Thomas G. While his Father was in the navy, George's family lived at Pearl Harbor, and he witnessed the 1941 attack. George himself served in the navy for more than three years as a weather forecaster; for part of the time he was on the USS Bairoko. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in meteorology in 1955, George Millay worked for a stockbroking firm until 1960. He married Anne Real in 1963; they eventually had three sons and a daughter.","\nIn 1958, Millay opened the Reef restaurant in Los Angeles with David Tallichet. He planned to create a submarine bar there so that customers could view sea creatures while enjoying cocktails. The plan failed because the water in the harbor was too cloudy. However, his interest in marine life introduced him to Dr. Kenneth Norris, curator at Marineland. Together with Milton Shedd and David DeMott, they organized the Marine Park Corporation to create a marine park in San Diego. Sea World opened in 1964 and expanded in 1970 with a park in Ohio followed by the Orlando park in 1972. Sea World Inc. opened an amusement park in Valencia California on 29th May 1971 in partnership with Newhall Land and Farming. Officially named \"Magic Mountain\", the park was designated \"Tragic Mountain\" by a reporter who was injured there. Sea World did not make a profit on the venture and sold out to its partner late in 1971. Millay resigned from Sea World Inc in 1974 because of a disagreement with his partners over how the company should develop.","\nGeorge Millay had spent a lot of time at Sea World in Orlando, and he thought that families would enjoy water activities as a break from the Florida heat. He pulled together ideas from a water playground at the Toronto World's Fair, a flume near Sacramento and a wave pool in Alabama, added a children's playgound, restrooms, gift shop and snack bar to create a new concept. He formed the Leisure Marine Corporation to develop his idea. Initially, the company ran the Seven Seas park in Arlington, TX, for a season, but the venture did not develop further. Wet 'n Wild eventually became a reality in Orlando, where it opened in 1977. The company took over the failing Seven Seas park and redeveloped it into the second Wet 'n Wild in 1983 followed by Las Vegas in 1985. Additional sites opened in Garland, TX, Brazil and Mexico. Wet 'n Wild was named the Best of Aquatics for 2003 by Aquatics International magazine.","\nMillay retired from Wet 'n Wild in 1998, but he continued to work on new projects. He designed and patented a system for moving visitors down into the center of a circular aquarium so that everyone had a good view of the fish. Millay partnered with William Watts and David Powell in creating a company named Sea Venture to sell the system. At the time of his death in 2006, no examples of the system had been sold.","\nGeorge Millay received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and the Themed Entertainment Association, and he was named the Father of the Waterpark Industry by the World Waterpark Association. Tim O'Brien wrote Millay's biography entitled The Wave Maker in 2004.","Collection processed by Judith Beale; finding aid prepared by Judith Beale. From this experience, and knowing that the U.S. at the time ranked 17th in the world with an infant mortality rate of 11.2 deaths per 1,000 live births, Lawton Chiles began a crusade to reduce the death rates of U.S. infants, especially in his home state of Florida. In 1985, he led a congressional field hearing at a Washington, D.C. hospital that initiated the concept that ultimately became the National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality.","The National Commission to Prevent Infant Mortality Act of 1986, a bi-partisan panel established by Public Law 99-660, was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on November 14, 1986. Chiles chaired the Commission from 1986 to 1993, first as a Senator, then as Governor. (He was elected Governor of Florida in 1990.) The Commission helped focus the nation's attention on infant mortality and the importance of early prenatal care. The Commission was dissolved in 1993.","Governor Chiles, aspiring to continue his support of maternal and infant health initiatives outside his government position, established the Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies in Tampa, Florida, in 1997. The Center's focus is on improving infant and maternal health research/services nationally.  In December 1998, Lawton Chiles died of a heart attack, just three weeks before his second term as Florida's governor officially ended.","Note written by RC, 2013","Select materials transferred to The Chiles Center from the holdings of Mary Brecht Carpenter, MPH, RN, ca. 1999.  (See letter addressed to Delores F. In 1937, he married Margit (\"Manci\") Wigner, the sister of Eugene P. Wigner a Hungarian colleague at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study. He adopted her two children, Judith and Gabriel. He is buried in Tallahassee.","To ensure the preservation of the materials and their accessibility to researchers, nonprint materials (photographs, negatives, memorabilia, and recordings) have been removed from their original locations among the papers and collected into appropriate locations. Manuscripts, galley proofs, and published materials by P. A. M. Dirac similarly have been brought together. His office collections of reprints and books have been maintained as transferred.","Very little of the deposited material has been removed, mainly envelopes not needed to establish dates or the identity of correspondents. Likewise journals, multiple copies of reprints, and other published materials, easily found in libraries' holdings, have been removed unless there was evidence of Dirac's use. All other items received have been retained. There is no evidence that it was Dirac's practice to keep a file of outgoing correspondence. Except for occasional notes on incoming letters to guide his assistants in replying, the content of his outgoing letters must be inferred from his actions and from subsequent incoming letters or by examining the correspondence of the recipients in other repositories.","Regrettably, much of the original order of the collection was disrupted prior to deposit as a consequence of arriving at various times from Dirac's office, home, and elsewhere and the reintegration of a collection materials temporarily on loan to the Churchill College Archives. A trans-Atlantic relocation of the Dirac possessions from Cambridge to Tallahassee in 1972 undoubtedly had a similar effect. However, during the processing of this collection, the original order of the files was preserved as closely as possible. The general arrangement consists of three major segments: the first consisting of family papers and photographs, regardless of date, and materials relating to this educational activities through his being awarded his doctorate at Cambridge in 1926. The second, and largest, segment is comprised of his \"professional\" papers dealing with his scientific work, lecturing, and teaching. Materials dealing with his extensive travel, membership in professional associations, and awards are also in this section. The third component contains realia, honorary certificates, and similar items.","Processed by: Charles Wm. Conaway, Joseph R. McElrath, Jr., Billie B. Oakes, and Burton H.
