His oldest son, Aurelio, obtained a Law Degree in La Habana and joined the Ultramar Service in the Philippines soon after his father's death. Later, Aurelio went to Spain, married, and became a successful lawyer. Manolo graduated from Medical school and moved to Yaguajay, near Remedios, Las Villas. Pelayo, the third and youngest son, graduated from Medical School in 1905 in Nashville, Tennessee, and served the Cuban Republic as a Public Health physician for many years.","A lo largo de su vida, Julián Peláez del Pozo reunió todos los materiales de esta colección. He was survived by his six children: Carmen, Aurelio, Manolo, Pelayo, María Ana y María Teresa. Manolo became the guardian of his father's personal papers. Manolo's grandson, also named Manolo, inherited a box of papers with Julian's documentation. When Martha Pelaez began to research and write her family history, Manolo gave her Julian's papers and jointly decided that they belonged in the archives of the Special Collection at Florida International University. Unfortunately, much more was left in Cuba, including photos, personal correspondence and memorabilia. This makes this collection even more important because it is the only material thing they have left from Julián Peláez del Pozo.","La colección contiene documentos personales y profesionales relacionados a Julián Peláez del Pozo, Magistrado español que sirvió en los tribunales de Ultramar en Cuba y Puerto Rico durante el siglo XIX. He first spent time in Haiti as a child, when his father, Robert Debs Heinl, was Chief of the U.S. Naval Mission to Haiti (1959-1963). Michael lived there, in Port-au-Prince, until 1962, when he was sent back to the United States after nearly triggering a diplomatic incident. Michael, just twelve years old, had been arrested by a Tonton Macoute for publicly voicing criticism of the François Duvalier regime and had been taken to the presidential palace to be imprisoned. He was ultimately released, but only after catching the attention of the president's son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, who happened to be a close friend. Consequently, Michael's parents decided that he should return to the United States. As it was, Michael's father, an opponent of the Duvalier regime, was subsequently declared persona non grata the following year. The Heinl family nonetheless retained an interest in Haiti; Michael's parents, Robert Debs Heinl and Nancy Gordon Heinl, collected Haitian art and print materials through the rest of their lives, and in 1978 they published a popular history of the country, Written in Blood: The Story of the Haitian People, 1492-1971. Michael later built upon his parents' collection and revised and expanded a third edition of Written in Blood as well. Due to his knowledge of Haiti, Michael was invited in 2004 to testify at the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee on the Western Hemisphere. Professionally, Michael worked in the aerospace industry and then as an international business consultant in Washington, D.C.
