Attaway enrolled at Florida Southern College in the fall of 1947, where he majored in chemistry\nbut also took citrus classes so that he could help his father in their groves. There he worked under Dr. Louis MacDowell, the center's first Director of Scientific Research and with C.D. Atkins. He led several years of research and efforts to reduce worker exposure to fumigants and reduced pesticide residues on citrus. This helped to\nperfect the use of cold treatment as the main infestation treatment for the Caribbean fruit fly. Attaway also authored many publications, including two books A History of Florida Citrus Freezes, 1997, and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture, 1999.
