His father was a prominent local businessman, and Andy attended private schools in Cincinnati as well as Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Ireland graduated with a degree in business from Yale University in 1952 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University in New York in 1954.\nImmediately after graduating from Columbia, Andy Ireland relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where secured employment with Barnett National Bank. At Barnett, Ireland worked in lending before getting the opportunity to travel the state as a representative of the bank, where he was able to meet many other people in Florida's business and banking communities. In the fall of 1961 he was offered a job as a senior vice-president of a bank in Fort Lauderdale. Shortly after this, he was presented with an opportunity to buy into the American National Bank in Winter Haven. He became president of the bank, and was active in the Winter Haven community. He was responsible for convincing the Boston Red Sox to use Winter Haven as their spring training home. He was elected to the Winter Haven City Commission in 1966. From 1968-70, Ireland served as a member of the Federal Reserve Bank , Jacksonville branch. In 1972 Andy Ireland ran in a special election for the Florida Senate, but was defeated in the runoff by Curtis Peterson. In 1976, U.S. Congressman James A. Haley (D-FL), of the 8th Congressional District, announced that he was retiring after serving in congress for twentythree years. Andy Ireland entered the Democratic primary for this open seat and was subsequently elected. Andy Ireland assumed office in January, 1977 and was assigned to the House International Relations Committee. He had initially been chosen to serve on the Banking Committee, but wanted to broaden his experience and not give the impression that he hadbeen elected to help banks. Ireland was a friend of House Speaker Thomas P. \"Tip\" O'Neil, and was appointed as a Democratic Whip. In subsequent years, Congressman Ireland served on the House Armed Services Committee and House Select Committee on Intelligence. In 1984 Andy Ireland announced that he would run for reelection as a member of the Republican Party. He was a conservative Democrat and no longer felt that the party\naccurately reflected his views. He served the remainder of his time in congress as a Republican. In 1992, Andy Ireland decided not to seek reelection. He retired from the congress and has since worked as a consultant.","Please Note that Congressman Ireland's staff changed \"Press Clippings\" to \"Media Reports\" in August of 1986. A Media Report contains newspaper clippings with additional analysis. Please refer to Boxes 69-76 for the subsequent Media Reports. Please note that files found in the State/National Issues should in some cases be crossreferenced with the District series (ex. \"Interstate 75\").\nPlease note that the Invitations Accepted series contains social and official invitations. Official invitations can and often include committee hearings and meetings as well as pertinent background information related to said hearings and meetings. This is especially relevant tothe House Armed Services Committee.","The materials in the Andy Ireland Congressional papers primarily relate to the subject's career in the U.S. House of Representatives.\nState of Florida and National Issues, 1977-1993 series provides information on issues that faced the United States as well as the state of Florida during this time period. Contained within are documents such as bills, reports, news articles, and correspondence. The correspondence is limited to communication between Congressman Ireland and other government officials. Very little correspondence exists between Congressman Ireland and hisconstituents, with the exception of letter standards that he used to respond to various inquiries. The arrangement of the collection, wherever possible, reflects the arrangement set up by Ireland's staff. Of special note is the information in the Defense section dealing with the A-12 Avenger project and defense spending. The district section contains documents, correspondence, newsletters, and news articles relating to specific counties within the subject's congressional district. The legislation Box Folder File Name section contains bill summaries, the congressman's individual voting records, and legislative activity guides. Videos are arranged alphabetically by subject and relate to specific issues (i.e. defense), general interest, and politics. The press section contains newspaper articles denoted as either media reports or press clippings. Photographs document the subject's career in the congress. Other sections contain information about the Congressional Classroom program, Andy Ireland's I-Team, and personal invitations.","The Congressman Andrew P. \"Andy\" Ireland Papers are owned by Florida Southern College. In 1928 Dr. Coyle Moore, later to become the first Dean of the School of Social Welfare, joined the sociology faculty and taught \"The Field of Social Work\" and an introductory social welfare course \"for those who expect to take up social work.\" By the mid 1930s, during the Great Depression, undergraduate courses in casework and group work were offered, as well as field placements at the Leon County Welfare Association and the Leon County Unemployment Relief Council.\n In 2005 the social work program became identified as the College of Social Work. As of 2008, there are approximately 300 undergraduates and 350 graduate students enrolled in the College and 32 faculty numbers. More than 50 students are engaged in active study for the Ph.D. in social work. The program offers social work degrees at the baccalaureate, master, and doctoral levels.\n The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) initially accredited the Masters in Social Work degree (MSW) program in 1950. The baccalaureate program was among the first of such programs accredited by CSWE in 1974. The Ph.D. program in social work was approved by the Florida Board of Regents in 1974 and accepted its first student in fall of that year.\nAdministratively, the College is directed by a dean and is assisted by an associate and assistant dean. Her formative years transpired within the confines of this city, where she commenced her educational journey at Edward Waters College. As her pursuit of knowledge unfolded, Solomon extended her academic endeavors to Bethune-Cookman College and the Tuskegee Institute, culminating in the attainment of a Bachelor of Science in Education. Subsequently, she further honed her intellectual skills at Atlanta University, obtaining a degree in Library Science. A career in education ensued, with Solomon notably assuming the role of librarian at Rufus E. Payne Elementary School.","Concurrently, her husband, James H. Solomon, imparted his knowledge as an instructor of upholstery at New Stanton Senior High School. A testament to their shared endeavors, James H. Solomon constructed the familial residence that would house many generations to come. Solomon's extended family, inclusive of the McGraths, converges in Alexandria, Virginia, contributing to the broader context of Grace Brooks Solomon's heritage.","Of equal prominence within the family lineage is Sallye B. Mathis, Grace's older sister. A trailblazing figure in the city's history, Mathis was one of Jacksonville's first Black women to serve on the city council. In parallel with her sister, Mathis dedicated a significant portion of her life to the field of education. In 1977, she founded the Minority Women's Coalition (MWC), an organization subsequently presided over by Grace Solomon in 1987 following her sister's passing in 1982. Grace, prior to assuming the presidency, served as the Residential Agent for the MWC.","The articulated objectives of the MWC, as described in its bylaws, underscores its commitment to fostering the holistic development of women, both educationally and professionally, while also encouraging civic engagement. Central to the MWC's mission is the enhancement of educational opportunities through an annual scholarship awards program and the provision of emergency assistance to vulnerable families facing existential threats. ","During her tenure as president in the late 1980s and 1990s, Grace Solomon directed her efforts towards improving racial disparities within the Jacksonville education system. Simultaneously, she emerged as a prominent figure in commemorating the legacy of Sallye B. Mathis, through her leadership in advocating for the renaming of an elementary school in her sister's honor. Grace Brooks Solomon passed at the age of 95 on September 11th, 2010. Her life stands as a testament to a legacy marked by an unwavering commitment to education, civic duty, and the advancement of minority women.","See also: Sallye Brooks Mathis Papers, Thomas G. Her life stands as a testament to a legacy marked by an unwavering commitment to education, civic duty, and the advancement of minority women."],"prefercite_html_tesm":["\u003cp\u003eGrace Brooks Solomon Papers, Thomas G.
