Personal Papers, Series V. Financial and Legal Documents, Series VI. Photographs, Series VII. Awards, and Series VIII. Printed Materials.","Michael Shaara (1929-1988) was born on June 23, 1929 in Jersey City, N.J. to Michael Joseph Sr. and Allene Shaara. Michael Shaara graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in 1951 and completed graduate studies at Columbia University (1952-1953) and University of Vermont (1953-1954). He began writing short stories in the 1950s after holding jobs as a paratrooper, merchant seaman, and police officer in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1959, he was hired as an English instructor at Florida State University (FSU) and by 1968, became an Associate Professor. He taught English, literature and creative writing courses.","Michael Shaara wrote four novels and published more than 70 short stories in magazines including Cosmopolitan, Galaxy, Fantastic Universe, Playboy, Redbook, and the Saturday Evening Post. He began writing science fiction and fantasy genres for the popular pulp fiction magazines of the time and won several awards. Shaara received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975 for his novel "The Killer Angels". His other three novels are: "The Broken Place" (1968), "The Noah Conspiracy" (known as the "Herald", 1981), and "For Love of the Game" (1991). Two of his novels were made into films: television miniseries "Gettysburg", an adaptation of "The Killer Angels" and film "For Love of the Game" (1991) based on the novel of the same name. ","In 1965, Michael Shaara had his first major heart attack and wrote about the experience in an article published by the Saturday Evening Post. The project ran until 2002.","The Von D. Mizell Library in the historic Sistrunk neighborhood, which became part of the Broward County Library system in 1974, was the headquarters of Library-In-Action. As a result of LIA-authored grant funding, four additional libraries were opened: Dania Beach Library (Feb. 5, 1979), Collier City Library (1980), Rock Island Library (1980), and Carver Ranches Library (1982). Also in 1980, the Von D. Mizell Library moved to a new building with a larger collection. These five libraries provided youth and adults with free access to books, literacy classes, and tutoring services. The LIA team earned millions of dollars in grants, trained librarians and staff, and conducted programming. ","From 1977 to 1980, Library-In-Action staff canvassed neighborhoods and offered library resources to the Collier City community before the Collier City Library was built. Prior to his directorship at the Langston Hughes Library he was the director of the Committee for the Corona-East Elmhurst Community Corp, where he began working in 1967. The Committee's activism ultimately formed the Langston Hughes Cultural Center and Library in the Corona neighborhood in New York City. Tyrone Bryant became the first Director of the Langston Hughes Library which opened April 26, 1969 and served the needs of inner-city residents. Bryant moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1975 to become the LIA Director. Bryant also served as the chairman of the Sistrunk Historical Festival from 1983 until 1988. He married Claudia Wright in 1986. Tyrone Bryant died on February 24, 1988 at age 45. It started in 1975 as the Broward County Library "Project for the Economically Disadvantaged" but soon became internationally known as Library-in-Action Project. They also created tailor-made services and programs based on community input.","Broward County Library's Assistant Director, Samuel Morrison, hired an administrative team to oversee the LIA program: Tyrone Bryant (Director), Janet Hansen (Assistant Director), and Tanya Simons-Oparah (Outreach Services Coordinator). The LIA team earned millions of dollars in grants, trained librarians and staff, and conducted programming. ","From 1977 to 1980, Library-In-Action staff canvassed neighborhoods and offered library resources to the Collier City community before the Collier City Library was built. The LIA's Homework Assistance program bussed children from elementary schools to the Collier City Library, where they received help with their homework and school projects, graduating more than 200 students in its early years. ","The LIA project also involved a Bookmobile and a Footmobile service - where staff went door-to-door promoting libraries and delivering books. Other notable programs included speakers such as Alex Haley (author of "Roots") in 1980, Elton Fox, and Tom Feelings. The Black Heritage program educated children on Africa, and an African hut was constructed in the Von D. Mizell Library as part of the programming.","LIA Director Tyrone Bryant coined the name "Library-In-Action". Tyrone Bryant (1942-1988) was a graduate of Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University. The many programs conducted during the BCL LIA project originated from Tyrone Byrant's experience with programs at the Langston Hughes Library, such as the Homework Assistance Program. In 1983 Bryant was named Assistant Director of the Broward County Library system in charge of Special Services while also retaining his position as Project Director of LIA. Bryant also served as the chairman of the Sistrunk Historical Festival from 1983 until 1988. He married Claudia Wright in 1986. Tyrone Bryant died on February 24, 1988 at age 45. Glenn Westfall, a retired professor of history, donated his Research Files to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library during the summer of 2005 and a subsequent accession in 2006. The Subject Files follow an alphabetical arrangement and generally maintain the subject designations established by the donor. These boxes represent the largest portion of the collection (4.0 linear feet). Major holdings include research and primary source documents on the Alafia River area, the cigar industry in Florida, mutual aid societies, cultural activities in Ybor City, immigration patterns in the Tampa Bay region, and biographical files. Areas of special interest include clipping files that document activities in the Ocala during the 1880s and 1890s and records of gatherings from the Tampa Old Timers Association during the early 1970s. All manuscript materials in the second accession (boxes 10 and 11) fall into this category. Items in the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Holdings boxes illustrate the business activities of a company that acquired and sold land parcels during the boom-era days of the cigar industry. Financial records from the late 1920s and early 1930s offer a portrait of the company's assets and liabilities. Abstracts of title provide historical research for various blocks and tracts of land in Ybor City. Thiese boxes also include correspondence sent and received by Martin Carrabello, a Tampa attorney who oversaw the estate after some members of the Sanchez and Haya families had passed away. The Serials and Periodicals box contains various publications collected by Westfall. In addition to newspaper articles and clippings written in the mid and late 1970s about the status of Ybor City, researchers may also consult various issues of the Bulletin of the Suncoast Archaeological Society (coverage 1976-1980) and articles and papers written by Westfall. In the Cigar Art and Miscellaneous Materials reside two distinct types of materials. The cigar art includes lithographic prints and images from cigar manufacturers and printers. This box also contains records of artillery training exercises at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the First World War. One item comprises the Government Documents series: the bound "Register of Prisoners Confined in the County Jail of Hillsborough County, Florida," for the years 1904 though 1909. An index in the front provides the accession number of the prisoner; with that number, researchers can examine basic information about the prisoner, his physical makeup, the crime committed, and the disposition of the case. The Films and Media Materials includes three films. Two of these films describe the cigar industry in Ybor City and exist in 16mm format. The other film is 8mm.","USF Libraries - Tampa Special Collections","Westfall, L. There are several subseries contained within the two series.","Fuller Warren, the thirtieth Governor of Florida (January 4, 1949-January 6, 1953), was born in Blountstown, 45 miles west of Tallahassee on October 3, 1905. He was the third of seven children of Charles and Grace (nee Fuller) Warren.
The father's death and the family purse did not permit the pampering of any of the Warren youngsters. When Fuller was eight, he was hired out to a neighboring farmer as a cotton picker at 75 cents a week and room and board. Later, he drove a cart in a saw mill, "hauling away enough sawdust to dam up the Mississippi River", went to sea as a steward on a passenger ship, sold Bibles in the Alabama mountains, labored in a livery stable, toted chain in a survey party, dipped cattle, and grew two crops as a farmer.
Fuller Warren developed an early interest in politics, running for his first office, that of a page in the State Legislature, at the age of thirteen. Warren attended the University of Florida where he helped earn his way by waiting on tables. He also found time to be a cheerleader, to serve as sophomore class president, and to participate actively in debating, 2 boxing, and writing for "The Alligator", the university newspaper. Still a student at the University of Florida, Warren was elected to the House of Representatives from Calhoun County, serving in the 1927 session at the age of 21. He was a junior and had to get a leave of absence from the University.
Warren received his law degree from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1929, was admitted to the Florida bar, and began to practice law in Jacksonville. He served three terms in the Jacksonville City Council 1931-37, where he became known for his "silver-tongued oratory" and immaculate white suits. In 1939 he was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1940 at the age of 35 he ran unsuccessfully for Governor, coming in third after Spessard Holland and Francis Whitehair. During World War II, Warren served 26 months as a Navy gunnery officer in Italy and North Africa, crossing the Atlantic 20 times.
Fuller Warren wrote three books, Eruptions of Eloquence , 1932; Speaking of Speaking , 1944; and How to Win in Politics , 1949, with Allen Morris. He also wrote a weekly newspaper column "Facts and Figures" f'rom 1940 to 1948, and was a perpetual writer of letters-to-the-editor.
The highlights of Fuller Warren's administration were: the passing of the fencing law - banning livestock from roaming Florida's highways; the passing of the "taste-test" citrus code which prevented unripe fruit from going on the market, damaging the reputation of Florida citrus; the initiation of a model reforestation program; and the preliminary planning for the Florida Turnpike. Warren's administration also got the Jacksonville Expressway system under way and arranged the financing and construction of the Sunshine Skyway at St. Petersburg.
Governor Warren made speaking tours all over the United States and in Latin American nations to recruit tourists and to invite new industries to locate in Florida.
After serving as Governor, Fuller Warren moved to Miami and practiced law there until his death, September 23, 1973. He ran again for Governor in 1956 and was thoroughly defeated, coming in fourth in a race led by LeRoy Collins. Though he did not hold public office after 1953, government and politics remained his primary interest until the very end.
There were few state or national issues during his lifetime which failed to get a public going-over by Fuller Warren, through speeches, letters-to-the-editor, or press releasesÂ. His colorful and energetic prose could be pointed and courteous at the same time. One newspaper columnist, with whom Warren took issue, wrote, "A chiding letter fromFuller Warren remains more eloquent than agreement from anybody else."
Warren never ignored a charge or a slur by the press, however slight. His counter attacks were immediate and in the strongest language barring blasphemy. He was ever prepared to "set the record straight." If a newspaper would not print his letters in full, he would publicize what he had to say by press release, paid advertisement, or printed handout.
Always controversial, Fuller Warren had many friends and many enemies. The latter found fault with practically everything he did and referred to his "Southern-fried inanities. " His friends saw him as a "big-hearted guy", one of the fairest and most conscientious men in the world and believed that most of his difficulties stemmed from these admirable traits.
It seems that everyone who knew Fuller Warren would agree that, whatever else he was, he was colorful: as a political figure and as a private person. Herb Rau, columnist for the Miami News said in 1973, "Fuller is an off-the- cuff spellbinder, whose ad lib virtuosity cannot be matched even by Senator Sam the Bible-quoting maestro of the Watergate hearings."","Papers, books, photographs, memorabilia, correspondence, speeches and scrapbooks.

Fuller Warren wrote three books, <emph render="underline">Eruptions of Eloquence</emph>, 1932; <emph render="underline">Speaking of Speaking</emph>, 1944; and <emph render="underline">How to Win in Politics</emph>, 1949, with Allen Morris.

Herb Rau, columnist for the <emph render="underline">Miami News</emph> said in 1973, "Fuller is an off-the- cuff spellbinder, whose ad lib virtuosity cannot be matched even by Senator Sam the Bible-quoting maestro of the Watergate hearings."

https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=Harrison+Sayre+Circus+Collection%2C+1863-2001%2C+Date+acquired%3A+00%2F00%2F2010%2C+bulk+1949-1994&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=Harrison+%22Buzz%22+Price+papers%2C+1948-2006&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=Jonas+and+Edna+Kamlet+%2F+Kamlet+Laboratories+records%2C+1913-1989%2C+Date+acquired%3A+00%2F00%2F2006&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=The+Florida+Citrus+Mutual+Minute+Books%2C+1949-2011&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=FAU+Student+Newspapers+Collection%2C+1964+-+2017&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=Florida+Photograph+collection%2C+bulk+1883-1977&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
https://flvc.lyrasistechnology.org/catalog.json?f%5Bcollection%5D%5B%5D=Florida+Southern+College+Buildings+%26+Grounds%2C+1922-2024&f%5Blevel%5D%5B%5D=Subseries
Democratic Women's Club of Florida, Inc.
