Coxetter was a Florida entrepreneur who owned seed, agricultural produce, and livestock businesses in West Palm Beach and Lloyd, Florida in the early 20th Century. When he lived in St. Augustine from 1902-1903, Coxetter and two business partners, James Kincaid and A.T. Perry of West Palm Beach, went into the fruit produce business. The enterprise was called the \"Everglades Produce Company.\" Perry eventually withdrew. Because of an economic downturn in South Florida during these years, the business was liquidated in late 1903.\n Following the demise of his fruit produce business, Coxetter developed a seed business after 1903. About 1910, Coxetter and D.B. Mills formed a partnership called \"Mills and Coxetter,\" which was renamed to \"Perkins and Coxetter\" around 1920 when his attorney, George B. Perkins, went into business with him. These businesses were located near Lloyd and Monticello, Florida. His company letterheads refer to \"Sydney V. Coxetter, Miccosukee Meadows Plantation, Grower and Recleaner of Florida Seeds: Giant Beggar Weed Seed a Specialty.\" There is also evidence from these records that Coxetter sold other commodities, such as cotton, hogs, and cattle.\n During the 1930s, Coxetter was involved in real estate development in what was then called the Griffin College Heights (known now as Griffin Heights) section of Tallahassee. He was also involved in Jefferson County Democratic Party politics. For example, Coxetter was an active member of the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee.\n Winnifred Dennis, Coxetter's wife, was the granddaughter of cotton farmer George Elliot Dennis. She was the owner and operator of the Whitfield House, which operated as a hotel during the late 1890s and early 20th Century. The collection also includes fire insurance policies owned by Winnifred Dennis' grandmother, Ida H. Dennis, for the Whitfield House and other dwellings in Lloyd.","Portions of collection available online?: No","In 1986, Special Collections staff rehoused the materials in archival folders and boxes and created a temporary box list. Coxetter's seed, livestock, and real estate businesses in the north Florida area during the early 20th Century. There are financial records documenting these activities, land deeds for George Elliot Dennis and his wife Ida H. Dennis for property in Lloyd and Tallahassee, and other legal records for property transactions. Correspondence and legal records for Coxetter's Everglades Produce Company in West Palm Beach are included. Dr. Raymond F. Bellamy, professor of sociology from 1918 to 1956, first introduced social welfare content into the curriculum in the 1920s. In 1928 Dr. Coyle Moore, later to become the first Dean of the School of Social Welfare, joined the sociology faculty and taught \"The Field of Social Work\" and an introductory social welfare course \"for those who expect to take up social work.\" By the mid 1930s, during the Great Depression, undergraduate courses in casework and group work were offered, as well as field placements at the Leon County Welfare Association and the Leon County Unemployment Relief Council.\n In 2005 the social work program became identified as the College of Social Work. As of 2008, there are approximately 300 undergraduates and 350 graduate students enrolled in the College and 32 faculty numbers. More than 50 students are engaged in active study for the Ph.D. in social work. The program offers social work degrees at the baccalaureate, master, and doctoral levels.\n The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) initially accredited the Masters in Social Work degree (MSW) program in 1950. The baccalaureate program was among the first of such programs accredited by CSWE in 1974. The Ph.D. program in social work was approved by the Florida Board of Regents in 1974 and accepted its first student in fall of that year.\nAdministratively, the College is directed by a dean and is assisted by an associate and assistant dean. Other administrative faculties are responsible for the doctoral program, the undergraduate program, part-time programs, and field instruction. The faculty oversees committees addressing most areas of school functioning, with student representatives on each of these committees. Agency field internships are carefully selected, and provide students with the opportunity to put into action both the conceptual and practice aspects of social work.","It is evident from her signature on many of these materials that they belonged to Patricia V. Lawton Distinguished Professor of English, Florida State University, specializes in twentieth-century Irish Studies, British, U.S., and European Modernism, and in performance theory. He has been awarded four National Endowment for the Humanities research grants, and has twice been awarded Fulbright Professorships.\n Dr. Gontarski has been Guest Editor of the American Book Review , The Review of Contemporary Fiction , and Modern Fiction Studies and most recently Drammaturgia . He is also General Editor of two book series: 1) \"Crosscurrents: Comparative Studies in European Literature and Philosophy\" with the University Press of Florida and 2) \"Anthem Studies in Theatre and Performance\" with Anthem Press, London.  He edited the Journal of Beckett Studies from 1989-2008, and currently serves as Co-Editor with its publication by Edinburgh University Press.\n The materials in this collection were used by Dr. Gontarski to research his unpublished book about Barney Rosset and Grove Press. Barnet Rosset was born in Chicago on May 28, 1922. His formative years were spent in the Francis Parker School, where \"progressive education\" flourished, and this experience led him to its political counterpart. During World War II, Rosset was an officer in the U.S. Army Signal Corps Photographic Service.\n In 1948, after having served as an officer in the Army Photographic Company in China until his return to New York in 1946, Rosset produced \"Strange Victory,\" a groundbreaking documentary about postwar racial discrimination in the United States.\n In the 1950s, repressive obscenity laws made it illegal to publish literary works that challenged the status quo or violated the prevailing mores of the day.  Rosset deliberatively set out to challenge these laws by publishing these books and defending them successfully in court against attacks by such departments such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency.\n In 1951, Rosset bought a newly-established New York publishing company, Grove Press, named after the Greenwich Village street where it began. Through 1984, he ran it from various locations in the same neighborhood, developing Grove into one of the most influential publishers of its day. Attracted to books that, through their form or content, challenged their assumptions of the status quo, Rosset published writers such as Samuel Beckett, Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Henry Miller, D.H. Lawrence, Malcolm X, Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, Jean Genet, Eugene Ionesco, Frank O'Hara, Harold Pinter, and Tom Stoppard, that other presses passed up because they were too experimental or violated social values.\n In 1988, the PEN American Center presented Rosset with its Publisher Citation for \"distinctive and continuous service\" to international letters, to the freedom and disgnity of writers, and to the free transmission of the printed word across the barriers of poverty, ignorance, censorship, and repression.\" He was named Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres bu the French Ministry of Culture (1999), and was honored with the Small Press Center's Poor Richard's Award (1999) and the National Book Critic's Lifetime Achievement Award (2000). In 2008, the National Book Foundation honored him as \"a tenacious champion for writers who were struggling to be read in America.\"  Rosset died in Manhattan on February 21, 2012.\n The Atlantic Monthly Press, under the aegis of its publisher, Morgan Entrekin, merged with Grove Press in 1991. Dr. Early joined the faculty of the Anthropology Department in 1969. He was chair of the department for several years and retired in 1993. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Master of Arts in Social Philosophy from St. Louis University, a Master of Arts in Theology from Woodstock College (a Jesuit Seminary), a Master of Arts in Sociology from Fordham University, and a PhD in Anthropology-Sociology from Harvard University (1965). Dr. Early began his career as a Jesuit priest, although he resigned from the priesthood in 1969. As a member of the Harvard-Chiapas Research Project, he went to Zinacantán to study Maya worldview and its Catholic elements. Later, his interest turned to demographic research as a planning basis for the literacy, cooperative and health programs in which he was involved among the Maya in Guatemala. It was also intended to bring to national and international attention to the severe malnutrition and high mortality among the Maya primarily as a result of social injustice. This interest then turned into fulltime research on the evolution of human population dynamics: for hunter-gathering groups as exemplified by the Agta in the Philippines, for tribal groups as exemplified by the Yanomami in Brazil, for peasants by the Maya in Mexico and Guatemala.","After publishing four books on population dynamics, he returned to his original interest in his two latest books—religious worldviews and their moral implications for the implementation of social justice. Dr. Early is a prolific writer who turned much of his research into journal articles and books. He has had over 25 works published, including such well-received books as: The Demographic Structure and Evolution of a Peasant System: The Guatemalan Population (1982); The Population Dynamics of a Philippine Rain Forest People: The San Ildefonso Agta (1998); The Xilixana Yanomami of the Amazon (2000) and Maya and Catholic Cultures in Crisis (2012).
