Born in Denmark with the surname Rasmussen, Reno emigrated to the United States in 1912 and settled in Miami, Florida. After attending the University of Tennessee, he became a reporter for the Miami Herald, working there primarily as a crime reporter for 43 years. Henry Olaf Reno had 3 children. He passed away on 7 August 1967 in Miami, Miami-Dade, Florida, USA.","Jane Wood Reno worked as a reporter for the now-defunct Miami News. Jane Wood entered Lanier High School for Girls in Macon, Georgia, at age 11. In 1925, her family moved to Miami, Florida, and she entered Miami High School as a sophomore and graduated at age 15. Her father, a lawyer, had moved down during the Miami boom years. While she intially thought that Florida was dull and boring, the 1926 hurricane changed her mind. "It had force, all that great power. It was something I could feel," she said. She then entered the University of Miami as an English major, but after two years took off to Greece to live with her Aunt Margaret Sloan (Hunter) Balfour and her husband, Dr. Marshall Balfour. In 1932 she returned to Florida and went back to UM but switched her major to physics. After graduating, she went to work as a social worker in Miami.","In high school, Jane Wood had been interested in journalism and even interviewed Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. In her first two years of college, though, her partying caused her to flunk journalism. After the 1935 Hurricane, she grew disenchanted with social work and went to work at the Miami Herald.","At the Herald, she met and later married its star police reporter, Henry Olaf Reno, and even managed to scoop him on a story which earned her "The Big Story Award."Jane and Henry built their house "way out by the Everglades" in what is now the middle of suburban Kendall. In addition to her job as a reported, Jane managed the Miami Seaquarium account as a publicist and grabbed world attention when she sent a male porpoise--via ocean liner--to Italy to console a femal porpoise whose mate had died. All of her pet peacocks were named Horace. ","
The Children:","Janet Reno was the first female US Attorney General, appointed by Pressident Bill Clinton in 1993. This was fitting, as she had always been a pioneer. She attended Cornell University, where she majored in chemistry during a time when there were not many women in that field. While at Cornell she was a member of the Women's Student Government Association (WSGA). She graduated from Harvard Law School as one of only 16 women in a class of 500. She worked for the Dade County State Attorney's office, and subsequently became State Attorney for the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida in 1978. ","After her tenure at US Attorney General, she returned to Florida and became involved in environmental and educational activism. She ran in the Democratic primary for Governor in 2002, though she was subsequently defeated. She passed away from Parkinson's Disease in 2016.","Maggy Reno Hurchalla was an actitivst and a Martin County (Florida) commissioner from 1974-1994, serving as a Democrat in a heavily Republican region. She was the county's first female county commissioner and was known for her strong environmentalist views, she served on the state board of the Nature Conservancy and on the Governor's Commission for a Sustainable South Florida. She passed away in 2022.","Robert Reno followed his parents into a career in journalism. He worked for the Miami Herald in both Miami and Key West, New Orleans Times-Picayune, and Newsday. According to his obituary in The Miami Herald: "As a liberal columnist from the 1980s until his retirement in early 2003, Reno took on the National Rifle Association, conservatives, and the super rich, railed against poverty, social inequality and corrupt politicians, and delighted in deflating the outsized egos of the powerful." Robert passed away in 2012.","Mark Reno had a keen sense of adventure. According to a Miami Herald article after his death, it was noted that he "worked as a game warden, a boat captain, an alligator wrestler, a scuba diver, a paratrooper, ran tugboats and an oil supply ship off the coast of Nigeria, and, primarily, worked as a carpenter. While in the Army he earned a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, prompting Henry to dub him "Lt. Fuzz" (a nod to the "Beetle Bailey" comic stip character). In his last two months, he managed to carve benches out of tree remains he'd kept, left over from the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992." Mark Reno also worked as a bailiff in Dade County. He passed away in 2014.","Extended Family Represented in this Collection:","George Wood, Jane's father, was an attorney in Macon, GA, and later in Miami. The epicenter was the long-abandoned Collier County town of Jerome, located on State Rd.29 just north of U.S.41. The Jerome lumber mill once was among the most productive in the United States. During the 1940s, loggers cut and finished about 100,000 board feet every day. About a thousand workers, mostly African-American men, kept the mill going. In addition to the dangers inherent in this kind of work, the men dealt with snakes, alligators, and oppressive heat. This little known part of Florida history was extensively documented in 1994-1995 by South Florida filmmaker and historian Cesar Becerra. This collection represents his work and research that has subsequently been used in exhibits and at least one court case. It includes photographs taken during the industry's heyday, government documents, videos, and oral history interviews with former loggers.","The materials in this collection concern the environmental impacts of industry in the Florida Everglades. Beginning in 1908, post offices were established on board U.S. Navy ships and each ship had one or more postmarks to "cancel" the stamps used on the cover. The postmark, or cancellation, would usually have the ship's name and the date that the cover was cancelled." Additionally, "starting in the 1930's, covers with printed designs, called cachets, began appearing and established a large following. Many different cachets were designed and sent to various ships to be cancelled and mailed. Some cachets were designed for a specific ship while others were generic (perhaps for a holiday or commemorating an historical event) and sent to many different ships." While the use of cachets diminished during the Second World War, they were revived at its conclusion and are still in use to this day. ","The focus of the interwar covers in this collection is of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, which was responsible for protecting and advancing U.S. interests in the western Pacific area and China. This was also a period of conflict between the Republic of China and Imperial Japan, and incidents such as the Japanese attack on the USS Panay in 1937 are commemorated in the artwork on the covers. Many of the ships represented in this collection went on to serve valiantly in the Second World War. Several were subsequently lost to enemy action. The second half of the collection focuses on the fleet of United States' first and second generation of nuclear-powered submarines in service from the 1950s through the 1970s, including the USS Nautilus. Attack submarines and ballistic missile submarines are represented, with covers and postmarks from important submarine shipyards and naval bases.","The materials represent two time periods: The late 1920s through the beginning of the Second World War, and the early Cold War period of the 1950s through the 1970s. While the ships may have served with other fleets and stations over their service lives, only their time in this specific fleet is represented here. This collection has a total of 265 photographic prints out of the 1,670, it is organized numerically by the number provided on the back of the cards. It capturing the diverse architectural scene and vibrant life across Havana. Originally distributed as collectibles by the renowned cigar company Henry Clay and Bock & Co., Ltd., this series is a visual marketing tool and historical record providing a snapshot of Cuban society during the early 20th century. During the 1920's, Henry Clay and Bock & Co., Ltd., came up with an idea to enhance the loyalty to their customer by creating the "Cuba Series", an initiative to showcase Cuban culture, society, landscape, and architecture. This collection was designed to be collectibles for consumers to partake in. The cards were printed with a photograph of a known site with the caption "Postal para el Álbum Cuba en 1925, obsequio de Henry Clay and Bock & Co., Ltd. de la Habana, a sus favorecedores." to emphasize their intentions as a promotional gift to buyers. All of these cards are categorized by numberically, it is an easy way for collectors to purchase them and build up their collection for display, specifically towards cigar consumers and enthusiasts. ","The photographic prints are organized geographically, dedicating to many historical sites, churches, administrative buildings, public parks, community centers, cemeteries, universities, gardens, palaces, private residences, factories, embassies and more. The point is to capture the visual imagery of Havana, Cuba's landscape and all that it has to offer and make known their architectural designs throughout the capital.
