She graduated from Dillard High School at just 14 years old and, at 15, entered Fisk University on a Ford Foundation scholarship to study English. Her intellectual journey deepened at Oberlin College, where exposure to courses on the African diaspora inspired her to change her major to Sociology-Anthropology, earning her bachelor's degree in 1957.","Gloria enrolled at Columbia University in New York, where she pursued graduate studies in Anthropology. She earned both her Master's (1959) and Ph.D. degrees in (1964), becoming the first African American woman to teach at Columbia University. Following the completion of her doctorate, Dr. Sudarkasa was appointed assistant professor of anthropology at New York University (1970-1976), again marking a historic first for an African American woman. ","Gloria Albertha Marshall adopted the name Niara Sudarkasa to reflect her evolving identity as a cultural bridge between African Americans and continental Africans. Her name change marked a deepening commitment to diasporic connection and cultural reclamation.\nAt the University of Michigan, Dr. Sudarkasa continued to break barriers, becoming the first African American faculty member in the Department of Anthropology. From 1978 to 1981, she served as Associate Director of the Center for Afro-American and African Studies, advancing scholarship and institutional support for African diaspora research.","In 1986, she became the first female president of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, a role she held until 1998. Her scholarship increasingly centered on the lives of women in West Africa and the enduring strength of the Black family. Her work in Nigeria earned her recognition from the royal court: in 2001, His Royal Majesty Aláyélúwà Ọba Ọkúnadé Sijuwade Olúbùsẹ II of the Royal Court of Ifẹ́ conferred upon her the chieftaincy title Yèyé Olókun Ìgbàdérò. Emma and Anton were originally from Munich, Germany and, in 1904, Anton immigrated to the United States from Bremen, Germany. In 1909, Emma married Anton and officially immigrated to the U.S. in 1912. Emma and Anton often performed with a woman named Christa Engelbart as the Baliot Trio. Anna Ziegelbauer and Frieda Tremel, Emma's sister, performed under the Baliot name as well along with a few other unidentified individuals. They performed in cities across Germany and then brought their act to the United States where they performed at various venues such as the Keith-Orpheum Circuit, the New York Hippodrome, the Palace Theatre, the Orpheum Theatre, as well as alongside the Ringling Bros. They performed for approximately 25 years, from the early 1910's to the 1930's. Emma and Anton settled in East Islip, Long Island, New York sometime around 1920. Shortly after the arrival of their daughter, Emma decided to retire and, subsequently, Anton moved on from his aerialist career to a new act—a comedy and athletic dog act. Emma remarried in 1949 to Alex Reinert and opened a few small businesses, the Blue Bake Shop and the Seabay Restaurant and Bakery. Ten years after Anton's passing in 1954, Emma suffered from a heart attack and died in 1964 at the age of 76.","The Ringling Photography Collection\nThe Tibbals Circus Collection of Photography\nThe Ringling Collection of Wardrobes","This collection contains materials relating to Anton and Emma Riedler's career as equilibrists and gymnasts under the stage names Tony, sometimes referred to as Anton, and Erna Baliot. The materials date from 1902 to 1997, the bulk ranging from 1910-1928. A significant portion of card and print photographs, ranging in size, capture scenes of the Baliot aerial performers, acts, and publicity shots, most in a studio setting and primarily of Emma and Anton Riedler. The scrapbook and printed materials consist of clippings, ephemera, and advertising of the Baliots as well as personal photographs and travel related printed materials.
