Her parents were physician Hayes Joseph Burnett and tennis player Roberta (\"Bertha\") Ball Burnett. She was the eldest of four children and grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. ","She graduated from Miner Normal School, Washington D.C. in 1925 with the intention of becoming a teacher. Wesley worked as a library assistant in the Miner Normal School library where she worked with librarian Lula V. Allan (1879-1968) who encouraged her to pursue a career in library science. Wesley enrolled in Howard University in 1926 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1928. She then enrolled at Colombia University's School of Library Science where she received a Master's in Library Science in 1931. ","In 1929 Dorothy married artist and art history professor James Amos Porter (1905-1970) with whom she had her only daughter, Constance \"Coni\" Porter Uzelac (1939-2012). James A. Porter graduated with honors from Howard University in 1927 and began teaching art there the next semester. His classic book and standard reference work, Modern Negro Art , proved to be one of the most informative sources to date on the creativity of the Black artists.","In 1930, Dorothy Porter began work as curator of the Moorland Foundation at Howard University, (now known as the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center) and worked to build the library's collections documenting African, African American, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Hispanic history and culture. After becoming the Curator at Howard University in 1930, started thinking about how to catalog books by Black authors and related to Black history and culture. At the time, she recognized that the Dewey Decimal System only had two numbers (for \"Slavery\" and for \"Colonization\") under which all works related to Black people or Black authors could be cataloged. In response, during the first few years of her Curatorship, she created a new classification system that reflected the true breadth of the books available on topics related to Black people and by Black authors. She disseminated the classification system to other libraries, and published it in 1939. Porter worked at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center until her retirement in 1973.","James Porter's died in 1970, and in 1979 Dorothy married Charles Harris Wesley (1891-1987), a noted historian, educator, and author. After receiving his master's degree from Yale University in 1913, he taught at Howard University from 1913 until 1942. Between 1920 and 1925, he also earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University, the fourth African American to do so. He served as President of Wilberforce University from 1942-1947 and of Central State College, Ohio from 1947 until 1965. ","Charles Harris Wesley authored more than 15 books on African-American history over the course of his career. His first book, Negro Labor in the United States, was hailed as one of the most useful works on the role of African-Americans in industry available in the 1920s. Dorothy worked with Charles on a variety of research projects even prior to their marriage, and continued to do so until Charles's death in 1987. ","After her retirement from Howard University in 1973, Dorothy Porter Wesley worked as a consultant for a variety of institutions and foundations such as the Radcliffe University's Black Women Oral History Archive. She also continued to write articles and books.","In 1994 President Bill Clinton presented her with the National Endowment for the Humanities' Charles Frankel Award. Dorothy Porter Wesley died in Broward County, Florida in 1995.","The book William Cooper Nell, Nineteenth-Century African American Abolitionist, Historian, Integrationist: Selected Writings 1832-1874 (2002) was the last research project that Charles and Dorothy worked on together, and was posthumously published by Dorothy's daughter, Constance Porter Uzelac. Uzelac worked as a medical librarian. After her mother's death, she became the Executive Director of the Dorothy Porter Wesley Archive and managed James A. Porter's art collection.","In 2000, Constance Uzelac worked with the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, James Findlay, on an exhibition of her mother's collection that was displayed at the Broward County Main Library in February and March of 2001. Samuel F. Morrison, Director of the Broward County Library, was instrumental in bringing the collection to exhibition at the Bienes, and would further encourage the purchase of the materials from Uzelac for the newly-opened AARLCC Special Collections in December 2002. Individual series are devoted to Collins' years in the House of Representatives and the Senate, the Governorship, the Chairmanship of the Democratic National Convention, his tenure as president of the National Association of Broadcasters, appointments as both Director of Community Relations and Undersecretary of Commerce, an unsuccessful bid for the Senate in 1968, and his years in retirement. He graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee and received a degree in law from Cumberland University in Birmingham, Alabama. He returned to Tallahassee and married Mary Call Darby, the great-granddaughter of Richard Call who had twice served as Territorial Governor of Florida.","Soon after his marriage to Mary Call, Collins was elected as the representative of Leon County to the Florida House of Representatives in 1934. He served in this position until 1940 when he filled the term of the late William Hodges in the Florida Senate. Collins purchased the Call family home \"The Grove\" in 1941 and shortly thereafter resigned his position from the Florida Senate to join the Navy in 1942. He was reelected to the Florida Senate upon his return from World War II in 1946. He was reelected in 1950, serving until 1954 when a special election was held to fill the remaining two years in the term of the late Governor Daniel T. McCarty, who had died in office in 1953.","Collins Served as Florida's thirty-third Governor from 1955 to 1961 where he dealt with the complicated social and political issues of the time. His two greatest issues were the dismantling of segregation and the process of political patronage, both of which he employed a liberal diplomacy. Collins was also integral in the development of the Florida University system, including the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is considered by many historians to be one of the first liberal Southern Democrats to transform the political agenda of the South and is thought to be one of the best governors in Florida's History.","Collins served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 1960, where he was a possible candidate for the presidential nomination due to his leadership position amongst Southern Governors and his strong stance on Civil Rights which would attract Northern liberals, however he did not seek the nomination. Upon leaving the governor's office, he became President of the National Association of Broadcasters, where he served until 1964. President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Collins to be the first Director of Community Relations, a government office created out of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was followed by an appointment to the Undersecretary of Commerce in 1965 by President Johnson.","Following his service in the federal government, Collins sought reelection to the Florida Senate in 1968. He won the primary but lost in the general election. His progressive stand for Civil Rights and his highly publicized role in the Selma, Alabama march while Director of Community Relations is credited with having cost him the 1968 Senate election.","Upon his retirement from public service, Collins retired from his law firm in Tampa in which he had been a partner. His two greatest issues were the dismantling of segregation and the process of political patronage, both of which he employed a liberal diplomacy. Collins was also integral in the development of the Florida University system, including the University of South Florida in Tampa. She was told she could write two columns per week, for which she would be paid the princely sum of $1.","It didn't take long for President Edward Conradi, however, to appreciate that the campus generated enough news to warrant its own paper, and thus the seeds for the Florida Flambeau were planted.","On January 23, 1915, the first issue of the Florida Flambeau hit newsstands, so to speak. Actually, for many years, the paper was delivered to students in a little red wagon, affectionately name the \"Flambeau Flier.\"","For years, the Flambeau was staunchly conservative, rarely running commentaries and only criticizing administration with proper approval.","As society evolved, so too did the Flambeau. When it was first offered advertisements from cigarette companies, the Executive Counsel of Deans and college officials vetoed the potential source of income. However, by 1935, both Lucky Strike and Chesterfield cigarette ads were featured in the paper.","For the next 38 years, the Florida Flambeau remained on campus as a symbol of the University. Then in 1972, the paper lost its funding from the University, but continued to publish off campus as a non-profit educational foundation. It surprised its critics by thriving for the next 20 years without financial support from the University.","By the early '90s, the once- conservative campus paper had produced multiple Pulitzer Prize winners, but had become a wildly liberal forum for anti-University propaganda and a soapbox for biased commentaries. Then in '92, following a series of slanderous commentaries and habitual editorializing, Flambeau staff writer Mary Jane Ryals penned a scalding front page commentary about the vapidity of the Miss Florida State pageant. Her commentary was the beginning of the end for the 77-year-old Florida Flambeau.","One month later the first issue of the FSView debuted. It was everything the Flambeau was not: It focused on the University with more attention to fact than opinion. With the FSView on the scene, the Flambeau fell fast, losing advertisers and accruing six-figure debt.","In 1998, the Tallahassee Democrat refused to print the paper without advance-payment for that week's issue, forcing them to publish only online.","Later that year, the Tallahassee Democrat \"called the note,\" meaning the bankrupt Florida Flambeau would either have to pay their $125,000 to the Democrat or the 83-year-old newspaper would become its property.","Seeing an investment opportunity, John Piemonte, the chief financier of the FSView, purchased the Florida Flambeau's debt from the Democrat, and in doing so, bought the Flambeau and everything that came with it. On October 15,1998 the first issue of the FSView \u0026 Florida Flambeau was published.","Four days later, FSView, Inc. (publisher of the FSView \u0026 Florida Flambeau) was purchased from Piemont by the FSView's general manager and sales manager, Rob Parker and Blaise Provitola.","These two men, along with Brad Ray, who joined later, are responsible for the issue in your hands right now, along with a staff of about 50 others.","We try to bring you, the reader, the best of both the FSView and the Florida Flambeau: campus and local news with hard facts you can count on, complemented by witty, insightful social commentaries.","Currently, the FSView \u0026 Florida Flambeau publishes twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays during the fall and spring, and once weekly on Mondays during the summer. We print 25,000 copies and distribute to 475 sites around Tallahassee, making us the sixth-highest circulated college newspaper in the nation, and No. 1 in terms of newspaper sites. We also have the third-highest ratio of newspapers per students in the nation.\"","Note written by FSView \u0026 Florida Flambeau staff  (5/31/04.) FSView. Accessed Feb 27, 2007 from website","This collection is composed of a wide variety of over 12,000 photographs, in addition to a small number of accompanying documents, united by the common characteristic of having been created or collected by the FSView and Florida Flambeau staff members for use in the newspaper. These images span the past three decades and provide a glimpse into the not only the makings of the newspaper, but also college life at Florida State University. The FSView and Florida Flambeau collection tells the story of an evolving landscape of students and culture in the last decades of the 20th century. In addition to containing illustrations of the university through the years, this collection sheds light into the way in which FSU students experienced and viewed national and international events.\n \nThe subject matter of the photographs within the collection varies, containing photographs of students, administration personnel, educators, places, events, and objects. While all of the photographs are documentary in nature, as they were explicitly created to be used in the FSView, some may be seen to express an artistic vision. These images span the 1970s through the 1990s. The collection is particularly strong in its coverage of the 1980s and 1990s and reveals the styles, attitudes, and past times associated with these decades.","Select materials from this collection have been digitized and are available through the FSU Digital Library as part of a larger photograph collection.","To request permission to quote, publish, broadcast or otherwise reproduce from the archives, please contact Heritage \u0026 University Archives, Florida State University Libraries, Tallahassee, Florida.
