Oversize Material","Hindi Diamond was born in New York on September 11, 1924. In 1941 at the age of 17, Hindi's Family moved to Panama for work. Hindi applied to be a reporter at the Panama American, an American daily newspaper run by Harmodio Arias. She never got a reply. By 25 she was married to Walter Diamond and had two children, Linda and Steven. Hindi applied again to Panama American and got the job. Her beat was covering the Panama Canal governemnt, its court administrations, military bases and waterfront. Hindi was the first female reporter and photographer for the Panama American. She wrote articles and took pictures of many important people such as Dwight D. Eisnehower, Queen Elizabeth, Richard Nixon, Juan D. Peron, King Leopold III of Belgium and Anastasio Somoza....etc. During this time, Hindi was also the founder and editor of Industrica Turistica magazine. After 10 years of working in Panama for the Panama American, Hindi moved to Miami with her now three children, Linda, Steven and Mark. Hindi freenlanced for various newspapers such as Coral Gables Community News, Miami Herald, Forward, and South Florida Business Journal...etc. Hindi taught various classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Insitiute at Florida Interational University and Florida Atlantic University. She also taught Yiddish classes at the Jewish Community Center. Hindi served as vice president of the Miami Internanational Press Club. She was awarded the Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero from the Panama Governmenet for her jouralim work in 1997. The Jewsih Museum awarded Hindi its Breaking the Glass Ceiling award. After long and sucessful life, Hindi Diamond died on December 12, 2014 at age 90.","The Hindi Diamond Collection documents the life and career of Hindi Diamond. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Michael Spencer named a genus of bromeliads \"Racinaea\" in honor of Racine Foster. While engaged in his research, Spencer amassed this collection of materials concerning bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.","Materials were rehoused in pH neutral folders and cartons. Photographs, negatives and slides were enclosed in polyester sleeves. Many of the materials were well organized and the arrangement was retained. The remainder were arranged by following the original arrangement as far as possible. Notes on folders were retained in the new folder. Paper clips were replaced with plastic clips or materials that belonged together were held together in a pH neutral paper sleeve. Loose-leaf notebooks that were badly rusted were discarded and the contents placed in folders. Items loose in the back of notebooks were foldered separately and marked accordingly. Notes from a film canister were written exactly as found as the label could not be removed. Albums falling apart were taken apart and foldered. Albums in reasonable condition had the photographs attached properly with corners and the pages interleaved to prevent sticking. Loose album pages in the Foster subseries on Plant Information were merely foldered as they were not in an album and were found without context. During World War II, she worked for Bethlehem Steel, where she helped organize a union and became the company's first female shop steward. During the war, she advocated for equal pay for women and improved working conditions at the Fall River Shipyard.","After moving with her husband to South Florida in 1954, Ferris operated a day care center and later worked in a flower shop. At the age of 55, she earned a high school equivalency degree. In her spare time, she often went crabbing at Port Everglades, which was just around the corner from her home. After attending her first conchology show in Fort Lauderdale in 1970, she discovered a new hobby: creating shell flowers from Florida and Caribbean shells. Ferris's work went on to win five awards from the Broward Shell Club and was displayed at the Parker Playhouse. This proximity to the port sparked her curiosity, leading her to investigate activities there not long after settling in Fort Lauderdale.","For more than two decades, Ferris actively participated in public meetings at Port Everglades, denouncing misuse of public funds, corruption, ethics violations, governance issues, and environmental impacts associated with port operations. She was recognized as a fierce port watcher by commissioners and fellow activists in Broward County, eventually earning the title of \"Port Gadfly\" for her persistence in questioning the governance of the Port Everglades Authority.","Notably, she uncovered evidence that board members had used public money to buy themselves diamond and gold rings. She also fought against medical waste incinerators, monitored election law violations, and led a community revolt when the Port Authority attempted to approve a sludge treatment plant and later a scrap metal operation. Ferris played a key role in the abolishment of the independent Port Everglades Authority following a local referendum in 1992, which transferred administration of the port to Broward County in November 1994. ","Her involvement was fueled by a lifelong fascination with the nautical world and a commitment to protecting endangered species, including manatees and other aquatic wildlife.
