Early in his career, Pepper was a progressive minded liberal who sponsored legislation to promote equal rights, civil rights, workers' rights and the Lend-Lease Act. During and after World War II, Pepper became a driving force for the establishment of the National Institutes of Health, a system of government-sponsored medical research facilities.\n Much later in his life and career, he gained international fame as an advocate of older persons rights, health care, and for strengthening and protecting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other government sponsored programs on behalf of millions of Americans.\n Prior to his death, Pepper donated the bulk of his vast collection of official and personal papers to the Florida State University. It was his express wish that his collection is made available to researchers and scholars.","The Mildred and Claude Pepper Collection was donated by Congressman Claude Pepper to the Florida State University Libraries in 1979. Subsequent donations were made during the 1980s, and additional materials were acquired following his death in 1989. Initially, the Pepper Collection was housed at Dodd Hall on the Florida State University campus but was relocated in 1998 to a new state-of-the-art archival space located on the first floor of the Claude Pepper Center Building.","Peter A. In addition, there are files of his personal correspondence, speeches, photographs, recordings, and memorabilia. Also included are the personal papers, photographs, recordings, and memorabilia of his wife, Mildred Irene Webster Pepper. Mrs. Pepper always took a deep interest in public affairs and in helping her husband in his political career. She vigorously supported medical research, urban beautification, conservation, and actively participated in charitable and humanitarian organizations. There are also personal papers of the Pepper/Webster family, largely consisting of correspondence from parents, brothers, sisters, and other family members.","These materials document the political and personal life of one of the most politically active individuals throughout most of this century, and in terms of size, content, and national significance, they have been compared to prestigious presidential collections, including the Papers of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In addition to its value to historical research, these materials will enable current policy makers to build upon Claude Pepper's achievements as they continue to focus on his unfinished work. Because of his legacy, it is vital that the Claude Pepper Collection should always be accessible and preserved for future generations of scholars and researchers. Personal letters from Winston Churchill, Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and John F. Kennedy are among the treasures to be found here. The photographs include many individuals of historical significance, such as Pope Paul VI, Albert Einstein, and Martin Luther King, Jr. There are also recordings of such political notables as Lyndon Johnson, Tip O'Neill, and Hubert Humphrey. The Pepper Collection not only documents the career of one of the most politically active individuals of this century, it reflects the changes that have taken place in every area of American life. It contains a wealth of material on a variety of topics. Research using the Pepper Collection has focused on topics as diverse as the World War II \"Mother's Movement,\" American Indian land claims, national health care, Social Security, the Vietnamese conflict, and organized labor. It disseminates news about all aspects of the university to the media. Since 2005, the department has been led by and Assistant VP who reports to the VP for Marketing, Communications and Admissions. The university had a Public Relations Department from 1968 with its own director who reported directly to the President. The same year, it was renamed the Department of Public Information. As the university grew, the director began reporting to the VP for Community Relations from 1974. In 1979, the department was briefly renamed the Office of Information Services before becoming the Office of Public Affairs the following year. In 1987, the Director began reporting to the VP for University Relations, and in 1990, the Director became the Assistant VP for University Relations and Director of Public Affairs. In 1997, the department was renamed the Office of Public Relations. In 2000, department's work was divided and News and Information was created under an Associate VP for University Relations and Director of News and Information.","Duplicates were removed, and the photographs were rehoused in acid-free folders. Those images that will be heavily used or fragile were placed in polyester sleeves. The negatives, proof sheets and slides were housed in polyester sleeves within acid-free folders. In 2012, all images were rehoused in half boxes to create a more stable environment. Previous large boxes were over weight and showing wear and damage, floders were not able to stay upright. Two thirds of all images have been sleeved.","More photographs may be found in the papers of individual University Presidents. Scrapbooks illustrate the visit of President Richard M. Nixon. As many of the photographs have been published, further information about them may be found in University Publications, such as, Report, Emphasis, and Accent. All these materials may be accessed in the Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room.","The basis for the this collection is the News and Information department's images. However, additional images from a variety of sources will continue to be added to create a collection of images relevant to the university's history. Many of the images were published either in university publications, such as, the university catalogue, or student or alumni publications, or in local newspapers such as the Orlando Sentinel. These images are photographic prints, negatives, proof sheets and color positives. The prints are mostly black and white, but some are in color especially Series V that holds the slides and color positives that are 35mm and 120mm. Not all the images have been identified.","Series I: People, 1965-2008 contains photographic prints of individuals and groups that have been arranged in subseries by the role that the individual played in the University. Faculty, staff and administrators form the first subseries, followed by students, alumni, regents trustees and governors, advisors, Women's Club members, donors, government officials, speakers, performers and visitors.","Series II: Buildings, 1966-2006 holds images of buildings and construction both on the main campus and the regional campuses.","Series III: Events, 1967-2006 contains images of a variety of occasions. The first subseries concerns university events, such as, commencement and homecoming. The second subseries holds images of sporting events including not only intercollegiate sports but also intramural and casual games. A third subseries contains photographs taken by the Campus Activities Board of their events and activities. Fund-raisers, Social and Community events and a miscellaneous group form the remaining subseries.","Series IV: Campus Life, 1966-2004 holds images concerning campus life from academic endeavours and performances to the resources and services offered to students. Clubs are also documented here with particular reference to fraternity and sorority activities. This series ends with an assortment of images showing general scenes of campus activity, images of university icons and memorabilia and images used in publications that illuminate information about the University.","Series V: Slides and Color Positives, 1965-2004 holds slides that are arranged in two subseries chronologically and by subject. The subjects are more general than the arrangement for the photographs, but the topics are similar.","Series VI: Negatives with Proof Sheets 1966-2003 holds negatives that have either proofs, contact sheets, or prints associated with them. It encompasses all of the topics noted in the first four series. Although many images may not be found elsewhere in the collection, this series includes the originals of the prints from the first four series.","Series VII: Negatives, 1965-2004 holds negatives mostly from images in the first four series arranged chronologically and by subject.
