At the age of 22, Peterson enlisted in the United States Army and trained at Camp Hanncock in Georgia. During World War I, Peterson served with the American Expeditionary Force in France. Peterson was honorably discharged in July 1919. After returning home Peterson became a teacher and married Olga Clotfelder on June 14, 1921. He was then commissioned in World War II into the Army Air Corps and retired in the United States Air Force reserves in 1956. Peterson worked for the Pekin Community High school in Illinois as the superintendent for twenty-seven years except for the brief period of active duty in World War II. Peterson completed his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel and passed away in July of 1984.","Transferred from the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience to FSU Libraries Special Collections \u0026 Archives in July 2022.","This collection contains Franklin Merle Peterson's personal correspondence, newspapers, ephemera, and photographs from Peterson's lifetime. From an early age Hawes showed interest in journalism and Florida history. By the age of 11, Hawes was writing and publishing his own newspaper,  The Flint Lake Driver,  which mostly chronicled the history and people of the area. After graduating from Plant High School in 1947, Hawes attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. While attending the university, Hawes was a campus correspondent for the  Tampa Daily Times  while working on his degree in journalism.","Upon completion of his degree, Hawes joined the  Times  staff in 1950. He then moved to the  Tampa Morning Tribune  two years later where he started as a police reporter. In 1960 he became the Sunday feature editor.
