With Nellie-Bond Dickinson's arrival in 1935 came a movement away from physical education and athleticism toward modern dance choreography and creative movement. By 1961, students could pursue a four-year curriculum in Dance, earning a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Education. ","In 1974, the Department of Dance was established under the direction of Nancy Fichter. As of 2024, the School of Dance is situated under the College of Fine Arts. The school has a reputation as a center for the creation, reconstruction, and production of dance repertory ranging from traditional classical choreography to contemporary original works. Several concerts are presented annually, including Days of Dance, Evening of Dance, and Masters Projects.","The core mission of the school is to combine exceptional artistic training with a liberal arts education. This dual dedication to art and learning has yielded graduates who are dancers, teachers, scholars, and leaders in companies, schools, universities, and art organizations in the United States and abroad. In addition to classes for dance majors, approximately 400 students are instructed each semester through the general studies in dance classes open to our university community dancers.","The School of Dance is also the home of the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC). The mission of this unique research center is to encourage the creation, dissemination, and documentation of new knowledge in dance and choreography. FSU dance majors can observe professional artists as they engage in projects while in residence at MANCC.","Nellie-Bond Dickinson was born in 1912 in Wilson, North Carolina. She received her Bachelor's degree from the Woman's College at the University of North Carolina and a Master's degree from the Teacher's College at Columbia University. In 1935, Dickinson moved to Tallahassee to teach dance at Florida State University. During her thirty years on the faculty, the program was modernized, and more emphasis was placed on creative expression. She is known for establishing high artistic standards that influence the School of Dance today. ","Dickinson's emphasis in dance study was with Louis Horst and Martha Graham, whom she brought twice to campus. She was instrumental in bringing other renowned artists in modern dance to Tallahassee through events like the FSU Artist Series. Dickinson also established the Theatre Dance Group for which she choreographed and toured in the southeastern United States. She planned and directed the first Evening of Dance with the group, which the School of Dance still performs annually. After retiring from FSU as professor emerita in 1963, Dickinson continued teaching at Marymount College in Arlington, Virginia. She returned to live in Tallahassee in 2000 and passed away in 2003.","The Florida State University School of Dance Records contain promotional materials, programs, news clippings, photographs, correspondence, scrapbooks, school publications, dance scores, and other material documenting the school's performances and pedagogy. The collection consists of four series.","Series 1: Photographs contains prints, contact sheets, photographic negatives, and photographic slides documenting School of Dance performances and rehearsals, as well as guest performances at the school.","Series 2: Promotional Materials, Publicity, and Administrative Records contains posters, flyers, programs for performances and events, news clippings and magazines regarding performances and the school, press releases, booklets, School of Dance newsletters, correspondence, and photographs of performances and rehearsals.","Series 3: Biographical Files is split into two sub-series. Sub-Series 1: Faculty and Staff Biographical Files contain photographs and biographical information on individual faculty and staff members in the School of Dance. Sub-Series 2: Guest Biographical Files include similar records as Sub-Series 1 as well as news clippings, programs, and press books.","Series 4: Nellie-Bond Dickinson contains material created or collected by School of Dance faculty member Nellie-Bond Dickinson who is credited with bringing modern dance and creative movement to Florida State University. The series includes performance programs, news clippings and magazines, photographs, choreography notes, correspondence, essays, and poems.","Select materials from the FSU School of Dance Records have been digitized and are available through the FSU Digital Library .","Copyright restrictions may apply to works in this collection. Sheldon Abend was an executive producer who also served as an estate representative for such literary luminaries as George Bernard Shaw and Tennessee Williams. He made a name for himself by winning an intense copyright battle with MCA. A New York native who later fought in the ring and worked as a tugboat coal-stoker, Abend went to work for the American Play Company in 1957 with little education and an over-abundance of initiative. He rose through the ranks to own the organization in three short years, and after establishing the Author's Research Company, served as a literary consultant and rights negotiator for David O. Selznick, among many others. Gaining notoriety for taking on MCA, Alfred Hitchcock, and Jimmy Stewart in 1983 to establish what has come to be known as the \"Abend Rule,\" the tenacious negotiator went to the Supreme Court to clarify copyright law for instances in which the author dies during the copyright's term. In addition, he was known for Original Sin (2001), Why Would I Lie? (1980) and Rear Window (1998). He died on 24 August 2003 in New York City, New York, USA.","Language from the original item is typically transcribed directly and without redaction, especially for titles. The form is based around stereotypical and racist portrayals of African Americans, including mocking dialect, parodic lyrics, and the application of Black face paint; all designed to portray African Americans as othered subjects of humor and disrespect. Blackface was a dominant form for theatrical and musical performances for decades, both on stage and in private homes. Early in his career, Pepper was a progressive minded liberal who sponsored legislation to promote equal rights, civil rights, workers' rights and the Lend-Lease Act. During and after World War II, Pepper became a driving force for the establishment of the National Institutes of Health, a system of government-sponsored medical research facilities.\n Much later in his life and career, he gained international fame as an advocate of older persons rights, health care, and for strengthening and protecting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other government sponsored programs on behalf of millions of Americans.\n Prior to his death, Pepper donated the bulk of his vast collection of official and personal papers to the Florida State University. It was his express wish that his collection is made available to researchers and scholars.","The Mildred and Claude Pepper Collection was donated by Congressman Claude Pepper to the Florida State University Libraries in 1979. Subsequent donations were made during the 1980s, and additional materials were acquired following his death in 1989. Initially, the Pepper Collection was housed at Dodd Hall on the Florida State University campus but was relocated in 1998 to a new state-of-the-art archival space located on the first floor of the Claude Pepper Center Building.","Peter A. In addition, there are files of his personal correspondence, speeches, photographs, recordings, and memorabilia. Also included are the personal papers, photographs, recordings, and memorabilia of his wife, Mildred Irene Webster Pepper. Mrs. Pepper always took a deep interest in public affairs and in helping her husband in his political career. She vigorously supported medical research, urban beautification, conservation, and actively participated in charitable and humanitarian organizations. There are also personal papers of the Pepper/Webster family, largely consisting of correspondence from parents, brothers, sisters, and other family members.","These materials document the political and personal life of one of the most politically active individuals throughout most of this century, and in terms of size, content, and national significance, they have been compared to prestigious presidential collections, including the Papers of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In addition to its value to historical research, these materials will enable current policy makers to build upon Claude Pepper's achievements as they continue to focus on his unfinished work. Because of his legacy, it is vital that the Claude Pepper Collection should always be accessible and preserved for future generations of scholars and researchers. Personal letters from Winston Churchill, Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and John F. Kennedy are among the treasures to be found here. The photographs include many individuals of historical significance, such as Pope Paul VI, Albert Einstein, and Martin Luther King, Jr. There are also recordings of such political notables as Lyndon Johnson, Tip O'Neill, and Hubert Humphrey. The Pepper Collection not only documents the career of one of the most politically active individuals of this century, it reflects the changes that have taken place in every area of American life. It contains a wealth of material on a variety of topics.
