At the age of three Johnson's family moved to Youngstown, Alberta. In 1925, hoping to take advantage of the economic boom in Florida, Johnson's father moved his family to Jacksonville, Florida. In 1936, Johnson graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism. He studied pre-med until his junior year when he switched to journalism, because he later remarked, it seemed journalism students were having \"a lot more fun.\" Immediately after graduation he briefly worked for the Jacksonville Journal and various other Florida newspapers.\n \tNineteen thirty-seven saw many changes in Johnson's life. In that year he married Dorothy Burt, a childhood friend from Jacksonville and went to work for the Tallahassee Democrat as the City Editor. In 1940 Johnson left the newspaper to work for the Associated Press in its Tallahassee Capitol Bureau. He remained there fourteen years, the last eleven of which he was Bureau Chief. In 1954 Johnson returned to the Tallahassee Democrat and became its Editor.\n \tApart from his editorials, Johnson wrote numerous columns during his twenty-three years as Editor of the Tallahassee Democrat , including \"Under the Dome\" and \"Campaign Comment.\" However, he is best remembered for his weekly column \"I Declare.\" \"I Declare\" ran five days a week in the Tallahassee Democrat from 1965 to 1978 and at its height was syndicated in twenty-five Florida newspapers.\n \tJohnson's columns and editorials reflected his opinion on diverse issues. For instance, Johnson felt strongly about the preservation of nature and history in the \"Big Bend\" area, a name he coined for use in the Tallahassee Democrat . With others he created the Upsy Daisy Plant Uplift Society that helped rescue plants that would have otherwise been destroyed by road and building construction. Johnson often wrote about local history and lore in his columns and published his own history of frontier Florida, Red, White, and Bluebloods in Frontier Florida , in 1976. He and his wife were also active in the Tallahassee Historical Society.\n \tHowever, Johnson was a pragmatist and despite his work to preserve aspects of Tallahassee's natural and historic character, he realized that if Tallahassee was to grow certain improvements and additions needed to be made. In this regard he championed the expansion of the airport and the construction of a new library and hospital. He was one of the voices urging the building of a civic center and the development of a research park, the result of which became Innovation Park. Johnson also set up a group through the Tallahassee Democrat known as Funders Inc., which sent needy kids to summer camp.\n \tJohnson's tenure at the Tallahassee Democrat was not without controversy. His opinions could often be polarizing. He did not see the role of editor as an unbiased mediator. As he explained in one of his columns, \"There is no pretense of being unbiased or sitting in the middle of the road. We agree with the fellow who said he never saw much there except a yellow streak and once in a while a dead skunk or possum.\"\n \tJohnson retired from the Tallahassee Democrat in January of 1978. In 1984 he published I Declare , a collection of essays encapsulating his twenty-three years at the Tallahassee Democrat . Johnson died December 6, 1989.","Portions of collection available online?: No","Processing of this collection was partially funded by a National Historical and Publications Records Commission grant. His father planted five acres of orange trees in Haines City, Florida and the family relocated to the area permanently in 1947. Attaway enrolled at Florida Southern College in the fall of 1947, where he majored in chemistry\nbut also took citrus classes so that he could help his father in their groves. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor in Science degree, continued his education at the University of Florida, where he received his Master's degree in 1953, and then Duke University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1957.\nAfter working for a brief period of time in West Virginia, Attaway returned to Florida as research chemist at the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred. There he worked under Dr. Louis MacDowell, the center's first Director of Scientific Research and with C.D. Atkins. Atkins and he\ncollaborated on three patents concerning \"essence for enhancing the flavor of citrus juices.\"Attaway developed a program to define orange juice quality by the content of desirable components, which contributed to taste and flavor. He represented the Florida citrus industry before\nthe EPA, OSHA, and other agencies regarding proposals to cancel the use of EDB (Ethylene dibromide) as a quarantine fumigant for the Caribbean fruit fly. He led several years of research and efforts to reduce worker exposure to fumigants and reduced pesticide residues on citrus. This helped to\nperfect the use of cold treatment as the main infestation treatment for the Caribbean fruit fly. Attaway also authored many publications, including two books A History of Florida Citrus Freezes, 1997, and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture, 1999. He was a member of the Florida\nDepartment of Citrus Medical and Nutritional Research Advisory Council from 1980 to 1995. From 1988 to 1995 he was a director for the Florida Citrus Sports Association in Orlando, and from 1992 until 1995\nhe was the Scientific Coordinator for the Citrus Production Research Advisory Council. In 1995 he started a consulting firm, Florida Citrus Consultants International, Inc. John Allen Attaway, Sr. was inducted into the Florida Citrus hall of Fame in 2001.","For more information on Citrus Freezes, please see the John A. Haley Congressional Papers. In the late 1970s, Japan refused to admit millions of dollars' worth of Florida grapefruit into their country. This was Florida's first dispute with Japan over pesticide residue. Attaway spent over two\nweeks with the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare negotiating new sampling and testing procedures. His efforts resulted in saving the majority of the shipment, with less than $100,000 of the multi-million dollar shipment being turned away. For more information on this issue, please see the\nAndy Ireland Congressional Papers.","This collection has been processed at a basic level in an effort to make this collection available in the shortest amount of time. Misfiled documents and other errors may be present.","The John Allen Attaway, Sr. Florida Freeze and Hurricane Research Files contain biographical information, research files, notes, and manuscripts for the two books - A History of Florida Citrus Freezes and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture. Types of documents include government publications,\nscientific studies, other academic papers, newspaper articles, and first-hand interview notes that the subject used in the writing of his manuscripts. This group of materials was into two series, and then by\nchapter according to the book. A History of Florida Citrus Freezes includes Attaway's preliminary research, four revisions of the manuscript, as well as promotional materials and tables \u0026 captions for the book. Alongside many of\nthe chapters is research materials dedicated to them. Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture includes research, and details of hurricanes from 1882\n1998. The first half is primarily excerpts from Monthly Weather Review, later adding the U. S. Department of Agriculture Weather Review (Florida Section) and several other scholarly sources. The seasonal weather reports information was obtained from the Report on Horticultural Protection Work for each agricultural district in the state of Florida. Generally, this covers the range 1937 – 1977.","The John Allen Attaway Collection is owned by Florida Southern College. This collection is protected by copyright and/or related rights. On December 7, 1931, the Florida Grapefruit Canners Association (FGCA) was officially established during its first meeting. C.E. Street was named President and Clifford Charles \"C.C.\" Rathbun was named permanent Secretary after having\nserved the group for four years. At this time, the organization was based in Tampa, Florida. In 1932, FGCA began working with the U.S.D.A. Citrus Products Station, which was established in 1931 in Winter Haven, Florida, to establish standards on canned grapefruit. This cooperation would extend beyond the establishment of these standards as the FGCA financially supported and advocated for the laboratory. The Florida Citrus Commission (FCC), established in 1935, would also join FGCA in supporting the laboratory.","Florida Canners Association (1937-1978):","In 1937, FGCA changed its name to Florida Canners Association (FCA); the organization was chartered and incorporated on August 13. During the 1940s, FCA continued to support the USDA laboratory in Winter Haven alongside the FCC, including Dr. L.G. MacDowell's research into packing citrus products in glass. In 1950, under President C. Howard Sweatt, FCA reached 100% participation from all canning companies within the state of Florida. In 1951,\nFCA took over the Canners League of Florida, which had been established in 1948, as well as that organization's informational services. In 1956, FCA moved their headquarters to Winter Haven, Florida after the city had donated land to the Association. In 1961, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held hearings regarding the standards of orange juice. Director Marvin H. Walker (President, 1951-1952) provided testimony and Secretary C.C. Rathbun was also present for these hearings. In 1962, the long-serving C.C.\nRathbun retired as Executive Vice President after having served the organization since its beginning. He remained as a consultant to the organization and served as Chairman on the Board of Directors. Warren E. Savant succeeded Rathbun as the Executive Secretary for FCA and later became Executive Vice President himself.","Citrus Processors Association (1941-1964):","In 1941, the Citrus Processors Association (CPA) was formed, and by 1950, the organization was based out of Lakeland, Florida. However, while at first independent from FCA, the two organizations began working closely together in 1951 when FCA took over the reporting of statistics regarding citrus processing and citrus processing by-products. FCA Executive Secretary C.C. Rathbun also served as the Manager of CPA. By 1952, CPA had moved their\norganization over to Tampa, where FCA was based at the time. When FCA made the move to Winter Haven in 1956, CPA followed and was housed in the same building as FCA. On April 16, 1964, CPA and its activities were fully absorbed into the Florida Canners Association. At the same time as this merger, the Citrus By-Products Committee was formed out of the directors of CPA to continue serving the citrus pulp industry and its interests. ","Florida Citrus Processors Association (1978 – Present):","On May 25, 1978, the Florida Canners Association changed its name to Florida Citrus Processors Association in order to better reflect the members of the organization. In 1984, Executive Vice President Savant retired and Clifford C. Beasley, Jr. assumed the role. In 1999, Lisa Young Rath became the Executive Vice President following Beasley's resignation. Rath would hold the position until she resigned from the organization in 2006. In 2000, Florida Citrus Processors Association II (FCPA II) submitted its first state corporation\nfiling, and in 2001, FCPA merged with FCPA II. In 2006, FCPA II reverted to its original name of Florida Citrus Processors Association and Kristen Carlson became Executive Director of the newly merged organization. However, in the same year, FCPA lost most of its staff and its building due to spending cuts. In 2013, Ansley Watson, Jr., the son of former FCA President Ansley Watson, Sr. (1955-1956), took over as Executive Director. He served until 2018, when\nKristen Carlson resumed her role as Executive Director. As of 2021, the organization is currently housed in the Tampa offices of MacFarlane, Ferguson, \u0026 McMullen where Executive Director Carlson is an attorney.\nThroughout the years, FCPA has worked with various state and federal organizations, including, but not limited to, the Florida Citrus Commission (now the Florida Department of Citrus), Florida Citrus Mutual, the Citrus Experiment Station (now known as the Citrus Research Experiment Center) in Lake Alfred, the US Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Canners Association. Also affiliated with FCPA was the now defunct Florida Citrus Processors for Good Government, Inc. campaign finance committee.
