At the age of 10, Linker was forced to join the Hitler Youth. When he was 12, he transferred to a high school 20 miles away from Nikolaiken. In 1939, his father was drafted into the military. In the town, they had both French and Polish prisoners of war help in the fields, along with the children, Linker included. In 1944 he was drafted into the German Navy, the Kriegsmarine. He was deployed on the Baltic coast near Memel (present day Klaipeda), as an anti-aircraft gunner. In the fall of 1944 he, as well as anyone else who was on the front lines below the age of 18, were moved. He was sent to Swinemuende, also on the Baltic. In April 1945, he was discharged from the navy, and went to Lueneburg because the USSR occupied his home city. He later received orders to report to a fighting unit in Berlin for its defense. He was 16 at the time. For the defense of Berlin, he was sent with a unit to the outskirts of the city.  He was injured in the stomach in a firefight, and walked to the basement of a building sheltering other Germans. After a nurse bandaged him up, he fell asleep, and when he awoke, he saw a Russian soldier poking him, saying to him in German, \"Come on, kamerad.\" he walked outside, seeing another Russian soldier, who pointed him in the direction to go. He joined other German soldiers who were captured. He and the other incarcerated individuals marched for the next few days to a prison camp that was used for Dutch prisoners by the Germans. While in the camp, the Russians separated the incarcerated persons into two groups, but when the officer who was in charge was not looking, Linker quickly changed groups and was spared 10 years of slave labor in Russia.\n In September of 1945, Linker was discharged. He decided to seek his aunt who moved from East Prussia (now Russian occupied Poland), to Lueneburg. He snuck across the border from the Russian occupied zone in the east, to West Germany. He returned to his aunt, who had him finish high school, and eventually went to medical school. He was 16 at the time. His father planted five acres of orange trees in Haines City, Florida and the family relocated to the area permanently in 1947. Attaway enrolled at Florida Southern College in the fall of 1947, where he majored in chemistry\nbut also took citrus classes so that he could help his father in their groves. He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor in Science degree, continued his education at the University of Florida, where he received his Master's degree in 1953, and then Duke University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1957.\nAfter working for a brief period of time in West Virginia, Attaway returned to Florida as research chemist at the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred. There he worked under Dr. Louis MacDowell, the center's first Director of Scientific Research and with C.D. Atkins. Atkins and he\ncollaborated on three patents concerning \"essence for enhancing the flavor of citrus juices.\"Attaway developed a program to define orange juice quality by the content of desirable components, which contributed to taste and flavor. He represented the Florida citrus industry before\nthe EPA, OSHA, and other agencies regarding proposals to cancel the use of EDB (Ethylene dibromide) as a quarantine fumigant for the Caribbean fruit fly. He led several years of research and efforts to reduce worker exposure to fumigants and reduced pesticide residues on citrus. This helped to\nperfect the use of cold treatment as the main infestation treatment for the Caribbean fruit fly. Attaway also authored many publications, including two books A History of Florida Citrus Freezes, 1997, and Hurricanes and Florida Agriculture, 1999. He was a member of the Florida\nDepartment of Citrus Medical and Nutritional Research Advisory Council from 1980 to 1995. The records indicate that the committee dealt with many different issues, such as acceptance or rejection of student theses; student suitability for continued graduate education; adoption and formation of college-wide graduate policy; and curriculum catalog content.\n By the early 1940s, the Committee's responsibilities remained the same, except that it was no longer responsible for deciding each student's suitability as a graduate candidate, nor was it involved in the acceptance or rejection of each prospectus. On December 12, 1944, the Committee's name was changed to the Graduate Council.\n When FSCW became FSU in 1947, the Graduate Council's responsibilities included the awarding of fellowships, assistantships and other similar financial aid disbursements. From 1954 to 1957, its members were appointed by the University President and Dean. The Council increasingly recommended items for inclusion in the University's budget.\n From 1959 to 1963, the Council's membership was elected by the graduate faculty from that department with each department having one representative. The Dean of the Graduate School presided over meetings. The Council was responsible for matters of policy as well as approval of candidates for graduate degrees. In the late 1960s, the Council changed its name to the Graduate Policy Council.\n By 1974, the Council was composed of 12 faculty and one graduate student. The faculty representatives were chosen by the Faculty Senate Steering Committee, and the graduate student was appointed by the president of student government. On October 30, 1978 the Council's name changed to the Graduate Policy Committee. By 1984, the number of graduate students included in the Committee was increased to two.\n Early members of the committee included Ruth Connor, Guy Diffenbaugh, and Paul F. Finner.
